Media copyright violations rife, say journalists

“Copyright protection is a must and Viet Nam should do it right now, despite the fact that there will be a lot of challenges.” — Photo petrotimes

HCM CITY (VNS) — The media, especially digital, ignores copyright laws resulting in rampant plagiarism and demoralising journalists, a workshop held by the Viet Nam Journalists Association heard in HCM City yesterday.

“Copyright violation has become a worry as serious newspapers spend money and human resources to create … an article, picture or video clip, but a minute after it is posted on their website, it is copied and changed without fear,” Pham Quoc Toan, vice chairman of the association, said while opening the “Online Copyright” workshop. My little friend – Rocky

My little friend, 11-year old dog, Rocky – named after the dog of Tottochan – a Japanese story written by Tetsuko. With a close childhood friend of mine, we booth named our dogs as such Rocky.  Rocky, however, is not any rocky-like as appeared is his name.

Rocky is strongly attached to only my family members. He is even a bit shy towards “stranger” guests visiting our house. He never hurts anyone. Rocky can only scare people enough by his German-shepherd looking and by his loud barking. He likes playing and sniffing around kids or babies rather than adults. So does he like puppies and smaller dogs. Continue reading My little friend – Rocky

A Risky Year in Global Markets Is Coming

Like many economists, I think timing the market is a pretty hopeless task. Buy-and-hold has been a reliable strategy for increasing wealth over the past several decades, so why waste a bunch of effort trying to predict something that, if markets are truly efficient, ought to be unpredictable? But once in a while I get a little antsy. Now is one of those times. Continue reading A Risky Year in Global Markets Is Coming

With the slaughter of at least 145 schoolchildren and teachers at a school in Peshawar, Pakistan, on Tuesday, the Taliban took its grisly war against the state to a more horrific place.

The massacre by the Pakistani Taliban, which has carried out increasingly deadly attacks in recent years, should prompt the country’s military and political leaders to reconsider their conflicted approach to the insurgency that is threatening the state’s survival. What the people of the Amazon know that you don’t

“The greatest and most endangered species in the Amazon rainforest is not the jaguar or the harpy eagle,” says Mark Plotkin, “It’s the isolated and uncontacted tribes.” In an energetic and sobering talk, the ethnobotanist brings us into the world of the forest’s indigenous tribes and the incredible medicinal plants that their shamans use to heal. He outlines the challenges and perils that are endangering them — and their wisdom — and urges us to protect this irreplaceable repository of knowledge.

Former Pro-GMO Scientist Speaks Out On The Real Dangers of Genetically Engineered Food

Monsanto – nhà sảm xuất chất
độc da cm – trở lại Việt Nam

I retired 10 years ago after a long career as a research scientist for Agriculture Canada. When I was on the payroll, I was the designated scientist of my institute to address public groups and reassure them that genetically engineered crops and foods were safe. There is, however, a growing body of scientific research – done mostly in Europe, Russia, and other countries – showing that diets containing engineered corn or soya cause serious health problems in laboratory mice and rats.I don’t know if I was passionate about it but I was knowledgeable. I defended the side of technological advance, of science and progress. Continue reading Former Pro-GMO Scientist Speaks Out On The Real Dangers of Genetically Engineered Food

Government to Ordained Ministers: Celebrate Same-Sex Wedding or Go to Jail

Heritage Foundation

For years, those in favor of same-sex marriage have argued that all Americans should be free to live as they choose. And yet in countless cases, the government has coerced those who simply wish to be free to live in accordance with their belief that marriage is the union of a man and a woman.

Ministers face a 180-day jail term and $1,000 fine for each day they decline to celebrate the same-sex wedding.

Just this weekend, a case has arisen in Idaho, where city officials have told ordained ministers they have to celebrate same-sex weddings or face fines and jail time. Continue reading Government to Ordained Ministers: Celebrate Same-Sex Wedding or Go to Jail

Hong Kong Protests

T.Y.Chiu, a student from Hong Kong

Emails: I am not sure whether words can describe my how I feel in these two days. My parents are Hong Kong police… I understand their thinking: Students are controlled and brainwashed by other parties… the Hong Kong government is not good but better than the Chinese government, occupying Central would lead to a severe effect on Hong Kong’s economy and social disrupt[ion]… Whenever I tried to explain, they would say I am too young to understand these things… The protest was not only formed by the voice of a group of students, but the voice of the majority of Hong Kong people. Living in Hong Kong for most of my life, it is so obvious that the city has changed so much. Not [for] the good.
