Vietnam’s government has often been criticized for its poor record on religious freedom, but recent events give rise to cautious optimism that small improvements are being made. Roman Catholic Pope Francis’ appointment of Vietnamese archbishop Pierre Nguyen Van Nhon as a new cardinal in January was a boon to the Catholic community in Vietnam and an encouragement for the government to make further improvements. The appointment marks another step in the gradual rapprochement between Vietnam and the Vatican, as Vietnam hopes to reestablish diplomatic relations with the Holy See in the near future.
