For the past 15 years, this man has buried babies from abortion clinics

The former construction worker bought land atop a mountain called Hon Thom in the city of Nha Trang with his savings. Tong began burying the dead babies in this idyllic setting. At first, his wife thought he’d gone crazy, but Tong wouldn’t give up his dream. He’s buried more than 10,000 babies over the years, but what he really wanted to do was save these babies in the first place. He said his graveyard isn’t just a place for sadness, it’s a garden meant to touch women who are feeling uncertain

Over 10,000 civil servants lost their jobs in the first half of 2016 as the government seeks to balance the budget.

Live cattle exports to Vietnam have been banned after more animal cruelty allegations

businessinsider – Live cattle exports to three abattoirs in Vietnam have been suspended after footage emerged of the animals allegedly being killed by sledgehammer.

But rather than the government taking the action, the industry itself has imposed the ban, with the Australian Livestock Exporters’ Council deciding to stop exports on June 12, just days after the fifth anniversary of the then-Labor government blocking exports to Indonesia in 2011.

What consumers want in GM food labeling is simpler than you think

June 24, 2016 3.42pm BST

The fast-approaching July 1, 2016, deadline for Vermont’s new labeling law – and a new federal proposal that would set a national system for disclosure – for genetically modified (GM) food has provoked a range of responses from food manufacturers while reigniting debate about the need to balance the weight of scientific evidence against consumer demand for transparency. At the center of the debate lay questions of trust in science and how the ways we communicate risk serve to increase or decrease that trust.

TOKYO — On June 24, Chinese political cartoonist Wang Liming, better known as Rebel Pepper, tweeted about the scariest nightmare he ever had. He found himself surrounded by seven or eight people, secret agents sent by the ruling Chinese Communist Party to arrest him. Their leader, Colonel Light, demanded that Rebel Pepper leave Japan with them; when he refused, they threatened to push him off a balcony. Soon, Japanese police arrived and surrounded the building, but Colonel Light and his men floated away ominously. Rebel woke up that morning, afraid for his life. Having left China for Japan, Rebel had thought that his nightmares would end. But they only grew more absurd, more crazed, more intense.

A few weeks ago I was fascinated to learn that local authorities in Da Nang have harnessed the power of social media to make their coastal city cleaner, greener, and more beautiful. People can go online to report a broken lamppost, flooded street or an illegal landfill. By helping to prioritize and direct the authority’s response, it has quickly become a success story for other cities and provinces to learn from.

According to Tran Sang, an official in Soc Trang Province, previously, the situation was only evident in poorer households.
