Sinh năm 1970 và bắt đầu sự nghiệp âm nhạc của mình từ năm 1997, Mariah Carey đã bán được hơn 175 triệu album, đĩa đơn và video khắp thế giới. Cô được vinh danh là nữ nghệ sĩ có số đĩa bán chạy nhất của thiên niên kỉ trong chương trình trao giải World Music Awards năm 2000.
Bố mẹ của Mariah Carey li dị từ khi cô 3 tuổi. Kể từ đó cô sống với mẹ và dành phần lớn thời gian ở nhà một mình chìm đắm trong âm nhạc. Cô thường bắt chước mẹ hát lại các bài opera mà bà biểu diễn và mẹ cô là người đầu tiêndạy hát cho cô.
Tình yêu là chủ đề chính trong các bài hát của Mariah Carey, mặc dù cô cũng viết đến các chủ đề khác nữa như chủng tộc, phân biệt xã hội, cái chết, nạn đói vv…Cô thừa nhận là phần lớn các tác phẩm mà cô viết có phần mang tính tự truyện kể về cuộc đời nhiều thăng trầm của mình.

Tiếng huýt sáo dài như tiếng gió rít ngày đông, và đâu đó ta như cảm giác được tiếng bước chân rầm rập của từng đoàn lính đang hành quân trên đường đi chiến đấu.
Wind of change là bài hát do nghệ sĩ Klaus Meine sáng tác năm 1990 kỉ niệm ngày bức tường Berlin sụp đổ, kết thúc chiến tranh lạnh Nga – Mỹ và sau đó là sự sụp đổ của Liên Xô . “Cơn gió thay đổi” ở đây ám chỉ làn gió tự do tràn về khu vực Đông Âu sau sự kiện này và người nghệ sĩ như cảm thấy được một Matx-cơ-va đang chuyển mình khi đi dọc bờ sông Matx-cơ-va và công viên Gorky trong một đêm hè tháng 8.

Hôm nay Nhạc Xanh hân hạnh giới thiệu một bản nhạc xanh mà các bạn yêu thơ trên Đọt Chuối Non sẽ thấy quen thuộc và hoan hỉ khi lắng nghe giai điệu chan chứa tình yêu đời, yêu người qua hình tượng Biển và Núi.
Những tư tưởng khoáng đạt và những ước vọng cao đẹp về một tình yêu mênh mông sâu sắc, khao khát, mãnh liệt, với những hình ảnh đẹp rất thơ và những chiều sâu mà ngôn ngữ với giá trị biểu cảm về một cách nhìn cảnh vật, thiên nhiên trong cái đẹp dung dị đơn sơ của nó. The Brothers Four viết và hát nhạc dân ca, thành lập năm 1957 ở Seattle, tiểu bang Washington. Bob Flick, John Paine, Mike Kirkland, và Dick Foley gặp nhau ở University of Washington, nơi cả bốn người là hội viên của nhóm Huynh Đệ Phi Gamma Delta năm 1956. Vì thế, sau này họ dùng chữ “Brothers” (huynh đệ) trong tên The Brothers Four.
Greenfields, phát hành tháng 1.1960, lên đến hạng 2 trong các danh sách nhạc pop lúc đó. Vào cuối thập niên 60 đầu thập niên 70, đây là bạn thịnh hành ở miền nam Việt Nam. Ngày nay nó là một trong nhũng bản nhạc kinh điển trong kho tàng âm nhạc nước Mỹ.

Greenfields – The Brother Four (1960, from Mitch Miller’s 1960 TV series “Sing Along with Mitch”)
Gotan Project là tên của một ban nhạc ở Paris,gồm Philippe Cohen Solal (Pháp), Eduardo Makaroff (Argentina), và Christoph H. Müller (Thụy Sĩ).
Gotan Project được thành lập năm 1999. Đĩa phát hành đầu tiên là “Vuelvo Al Sur/El Capitalismo Foraneo” năm 2000, theo sau với album La Revancha del Tango năm 2001.
Nhạc của gotan Project là nhạc Tango, nhưng nhanh hơn tango cổ điển, nghe như soft rock, dùng nhiều nhạc cụ điện tử, và nhịp điệu cũng sôi động hơn tango cổ điển nhờ dùng nhiều nhịp gõ, như trống conga và bongo, chập chả… Loại tango này còn gọi là Nuevo Tangpo, tức là Tango Mới, hay Eleoctrotango (tango diện tử).
Loại Tango Mới này làm tango trở thành sống động với thế hệ @ và đã đưa tango trở về vị thế nhạc khiêu vũ dòng chính cho thê hệ trẻ.
Tên Gotan Project là từ Tango Project năm 1982 của một số nhạc sĩ cổ điển Mỹ, họp lại để làm một tango album tên la Tango Project, gồm nhạc của Carlos Gardel và Alfredo Le Pera, và đã được dùng trong các phim khá nỗi tiếng như Scent of a Woman (tài tử Al Pacino) và True Lies (tài tử Arnold Schwarzenegger).
Vì mức thành công của Tango Project, nhớm 3 người Solal, Makaroff và Muller (1999) quyết định dùng một cái tên để tỏ lòng kinh trọng Tango Project, và họ đổi chữ Tango thành Gotan.

Ở xứ Mỹ, hầu như tất cả các cuộc vận động xã hội như không dùng da thú làm áo lông, mọi người cùng dùng compost đều được bắt đầu bằng “Let’s have a party”, mọi người cùng họp lại ăn uống cho một lý tưởng xã hội gì đó, hát một bài hát hoành tráng rồi cho lên youtube và website của phong trào, sau đó mới xuống đường thực hiện nghĩa vụ công dân 🙂

Hôm nay chúng ta cùng nghe bài hát “Let the day begin” của bạn nhạc The Call nhé, bài hát này được dùng trong cuộc vận động tranh cử tổng thống năm 2000 của phó tổng thống Al Gore. “Let the day begin” đứng thứ hạng nhất trong bảng xếp hạng Mainstream Rock tại Mỹ năm 1989.
Lời bài hát này rất hay, vui rộn rã và có một chút màu sắc tâm linh.

Bài thơ đầy lửa Che Guevara của chị Hoàng Thiên Nga làm mình nhớ đến bài hát Joe Hill của Alfred Hayes do ca sĩ Joan Baez thể hiện. Đây là bài hát đầu tiên mà mình biết đến Joan Baez.
Hồi đó khi ở mùa đông Vermont và nghe đĩa nhạc Woodstock 1969, có rất nhiều bài rock and roll đầy lửa, nhưng khi đĩa chuyển sang bài Joe Hill, giọng ca mượt mà sâu lắng của Joan Baez hát Joe Hill làm mình không sao dứt ra được. Sau đó mình cứ nghe đi nghe lại, đang đi trong xe với mấy láng giềng người Mỹ cũng tự nhiên hát, anh lái xe kêu lên, ồ Joe Hill với phong trào civil union đầu thế kỷ 20 phải không? Về sau khi mình xem Joan Baez trực tiếp ở nhạc hội Newport Folk Music, chị cũng hát Joe Hill và chị nói “I used to sing this song way lower and way higher” 🙂
Joe Hill (7.10.1879 hay 1882 – 19.11.1915) là một con người có thật. Anh đấu tranh cho quyền lợi của công nhân và là thành viên của Hội Công Nhân Công Nghiệp Thế Giới (The Industrial Workers of the World). Anh di dân từ Thụy Điển sang Mỹ, và thành công dân Mỹ. Gia nhập nghiệp đoàn, hoạt động nghiệp đoàn, viết báo, viết nhạc, và thành một lãnh đạo nghiệp đoàn có uy tín. Vào thời đó hoạt động nghiệp đoàn thường có nhiều kẻ thù từ phía chủ công ty và các thế lực nhà nước mà công ty mua chuộc được.
Ngày 10.1.1914, John G. Morrison và con trai Arling bị giết ở Salt Lake City, tiểu bang Utah, trong tiệm thịt cuả họ bởi hai người đàn ông bịt mặt, mang khăn quàng đỏ. Dù phiên tòa có nhiều nghi vấn, Joe Hill được xem là thủ phạm và bị kết án tử hình. Nhiều người cho rằng Hill bị kết án chỉ vì anh hoạt động cho nghiệp đoàn.
Anh bị xử tử vào ngày 19.11.1915. Trước khi bị đưa ra xử bắn, anh viết cho Bill Haywood, lãnh tụ của Phong Trào Công nhân Thế giới:

Alfred Hayes đã viết bài thơ “Dreamed I Saw Joe Hill Last Night”, để tưởng nhớ Joe Hill vào khoảng năm 1930. Earl Robinson viết nhạc cho bài thơ thành bài hát vào năm 1936.
Ở đại nhạc hội Woodstock hôm đầu tiên, Joan Baez đã hát bài hát này lúc 1 giờ chiều để giúp cho phong trào chống nhập ngũ đi chiến tranh ở Việt Nam và ủng hộ cho chồng của chị là David Harris đang bị tù vì không chịu tham gia quân đội. Bài hát này là điểm sáng của ngày đầu tiên ở nhạc hội Woodstock 1969. Cũng ở nhạc hội này, Joan Baez đã hát bài hát “We shall overcome“, một trong bài hát mạnh mẽ nhất của thế kỷ 20, là quốc ca của các phong trào đấu tranh.

Những ngày này, những cây thông và đồ trang trí Giáng Sinh vẫn còn ở những công sở và gia đình người Mỹ. Hôm qua mình đi thăm một bảo tàng địa phương và thấy một cây thông bên bếp lửa trong một căn phòng được thiết kể kiểu Victoria cổ kính thế kỷ 19 rất ấm cúng. Thời tiết hôm qua khá lạnh.
Một âm thanh nhẹ dịu, không lời của bài hát “A little drummer boy” phát lên từ chiếc loa phòng; mình cảm thấy rất ấm cúng và thanh thoát. Chúng ta hôm nay cùng nghe bản này nhé. 🙂
“Little Drummer Boy” là bài hát giáng sinh nổi tiếng được sáng tác bởi Katherine K. Davis.[1] Henry Onorati and Harry Simeone vào năm 1958. Bài hát còn được biết đến với tên gọi “Carol of the Drum”. Lời của bài hát rất đơn giản, thật thà xen lẫn với điệp khúc “pa-ram-pam-pam-pam”.
Bài hát kể về câu chuyện của một cậu bé nghèo, không thể tặng quà gì được cho Chúa Giê-su mới sinh, chơi trống để mừng hài nhi Giê-su với sự đồng ý của đức mẹ Mary. Kỳ diệu thay, bé Giê-su, mặc dù chỉ vừa mới sinh ra, có vẻ như hiểu, ngừng khóc và cười với cậu bé đánh trống tỏ vẻ biết ơn.
Đâu cần phải có nhiều tiền mới cho được đâu và chắc gì đã được nhận? Ta có thể cho cái gì ta có với nhiều tình yêu. Một bài hát, một sự phục vụ hết lòng?
“Little Drummer Boy” qua thời gian đã là bản chơi thành công cho rất nhiều nghệ sĩ, trong đó nổi bật nhất có lẽ là đoạn phim trên truyền hình Mỹ năm 1977 do Bing Crosby và David Bowie đóng và song ca hai bài hát Peace on Earth và Little Drummer Boy đồng thời.

BC: Oh good! What kind of singing?
DB: Mostly the contemporary stuff. Do you eh… do you like modern music?
BC: Oh, I think it’s marvelous! Some of it’s really fine. But tell me, have you ever listened to any of the older fellows?
DB: Oh yeah, sure. I like ah… John Lennon and the other one with eh…Harry Nilsson.
BC: Mmm… you go back that far, uh?
DB: Yeah, I’m not as young as I look.
BC: Haha, none of us is these days!
DB: In fact I’ve got a six-year-old son. And he really gets excited around the Christmas holiday-thing.
BC: Do you go in for anything of the traditional things in the… boy, household, Christmas time?
DB: Oh yeah, most of them really. Presents, tree, decorations, agents sliding down the chimney…
BC: What??
DB: Oh, I was just seeing if you were paying attention.
BC: Haha!
DB: Actually, our family do most of the things that other families do. We sing the same songs.
BC: Do you?
DB: Oh, I even have a go at ‘White Christmas’.
BC: You do, eh!
DB: And this one. This is my son’s favourite. Do you know this one?
BC: Oh, I do indeed, it’s a lovely theme.
