Một thời huy hoàng và danh giá, Phật viện Đồng Dương đã chẳng còn lại gì ngoài một chân Tháp Sáng với cơ man gạch vỡ xung quanh và chằng chịt những cây chống để đấu chọi lại sự tàn phá của thời gian.

Chạnh lòng Tháp Sáng

Trên một vùng đồng bằng lúa tốt phì nhiêu xã Bình Định Bắc (Thăng Bình, Quảng Nam) lâu nay vẫn được biết đến là địa điểm của một Phật viện từng được đánh giá là lớn nhất Đông Nam Á. Phật viện Đồng Dương được hai nhà khoa học thuộc Viện Viễn Đông Bác cổ chuyên nghiên cứu văn hóa cổ Đông Dương thời thuộc địa là L.Finot phát hiện năm 1901 và H.Parmentier khai quật năm 1902.

Tháp Sáng bị xuống cấp trầm trọng, phải chống đỡ bằng hệ thống cột thép.

Theo thống kê của Trung tâm Giáo dục Thiên nhiên (ENV), tính đến tháng 8 năm 2024, vẫn còn 94 cá thể gấu đang bị nuôi nhốt trong 16 cơ sở tư nhân tại Hà Nội với 94.7% số gấu tập trung ở huyện Phúc Thọ. Chiếm khoảng 49% tổng số gấu bị nuôi nhốt tại Việt Nam.

Điểm nóng về nuôi nhốt gấu trên cả nước

Trong buổi họp báo “Chấm dứt nuôi nhốt gấu tại Việt Nam – Hành trình sắp cán đích” do ENV tổ chức ngày 22/10, số liệu thống kê của tổ chức này cho biết, Hà Nội hiện là địa phương có số lượng gấu bị nuôi nhốt nhiều nhất cả nước, chiếm gần một nửa tổng số gấu bị nuôi nhốt trên toàn quốc.

Nghịch lý của năng suất

An Giang – “Tiền lời mỏng như lá lúa” là điều mà không chỉ ông Trần Hữu Lượng, ở huyện Thoại Sơn, An Giang, nhắc đi nhắc lại mà bất kỳ người làm lúa nào ở An Giang cũng đều nói như vậy.

Trồng lúa gần 40 năm nay, nhưng toàn bộ những gì ông Lượng có chỉ là một căn nhà tuềnh toàng chưa đầy 100 m2 chỉ có gạch thô không trát, trong nhà không có vật dụng gì quý giá. Cả đời gắn với cánh đồng nên căn nhà ông cũng nằm ngay trên một công đất (ở đây là “công điền”, 10 công điền = 1 hecta) trước là ruộng lúa, nhìn ra con rạch nhỏ dẫn nước vào đồng, để tiện thăm ruộng bất kỳ lúc nào.

LONDON (AP) — Like his ancestors for centuries, the Earl of Devon serves in Parliament, helping to make the laws of the land. But not for much longer.

British lawmakers voted Tuesday to approve in principle a bill to strip hereditary aristocrats of the right to sit and vote in the House of Lords after more than 700 years. The Labour Party government says the decision will complete a long-stalled reform of Parliament’s upper chamber and remove an “outdated and indefensible” relic of the past.

“In the 21st century, there should not be places in our Parliament, making our laws, reserved for those who are born into certain families,” Constitution Minister Nick Thomas-Symonds said Tuesday as he opened debate on the bill in the House of Commons.

Human rights advocates on Friday highlighted a rare instance in which a U.S. corporate media outlet allowed a pro-Palestinian voice to set the record straight about Israel’s crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Earlier this week, CNN “News Central” aired a panel segment on the anniversary of the October 7, 2023 Hamas-led attack on Israel and Israel’s retaliatory war. Anchor Kate Bolduan noted that around 1,200 people were killed during the Hamas attack—although she did not say that at least some of them were slain by Israeli forces in “friendly fire” incidents and under the Hannibal Directive—and that 250 others were kidnapped.

HO CHI MINH CITY, Vietnam (AP) — Dam Chan Nguyen saves dead and dying computers.

When he first started working two decades ago in Nhat Tao market, Ho Chi Minh City’s biggest informal recycling market, he usually salvaged computers with bulky monitors and heavy processors. Now he works mostly with laptops and the occasional MacBook.

But the central tenet of his work hasn’t changed: Nothing goes to waste. What can be fixed is fixed. What can be salvaged gets re-used elsewhere. What’s left is sold as scrap.

“We utilize everything possible,” he said.
