Chào anh chị em,

“Si” nằm cuối trong ba độc “tham sân si” nhưng không phải là em út như mọi người thường nghĩ, mà đó là anh cả, đi cuối để hứng hết cho mọi em đi trước.

“Si” hay “si mê” nói thẳng ra là ngu, dốt, mù. Bạn tham vì bạn ngu (si). Bạn sân vì bạn ngu (si). Bạn làm điều bậy vì bạn ngu (si). Và bạn ngu cũng vì bạn ngu (si). “Si” hay “si mê” là lý do của tất cả mọi tội lỗi khác.

“Si” chẳng liên quan gì đến óc thông minh (IQ’s) và kiến thức (knowledge) của bạn. Bạn có thể có 5 bằng tiến sĩ trong túi, bạn vẫn si. “Si” là không hiểu được chân lý sâu thẳm về cuộc đời, về chính mình, cũng như về mọi người mọi vật. Nói đơn giản là mù tịt.

Trong thánh kinh, Adam ăn trái cấm, trái lời Chúa dặn, chỉ vì Eva ăn trước và đưa cho Adam ăn, và chàng ăn tự nhiên, không thắc mắc đến nửa lời. Thế không phải là ngu, thì nó là gì? “Eva hái và ăn. Cô cũng cho chồng cô một ít vì chồng cô đang đứng cạnh cô, và anh ta ăn – she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.” (Genesis 3:6). Không gọi là ngu, thì gọi là dại gái. Nhưng “dại” gái tức là ngu, chứ còn gì nữa.

Phân tích thế để chúng ta thấy cái ngu – “si” – bao sân cho tất cả mọi thứ khác. Người tham thì biết mình tham, người sân (nóng giận) thì biết mình sân, nhưng người ngu thì chịu thua – người ngu chẳng thể biết mình ngu. Cho nên nhà Phật luôn nói con người si mê – ngu và không biết mình ngu.

Người say không biết mình say, người điên không biết mình điên, người si mê không biết mình si mê.

Hết si mê thì giác ngộ. Nhưng chẳng dễ gì mà hết si mê, vì mình chẳng biết mình si mê thì làm sao mà hết si mê được. Phải biết mình thế nào thì mới chỉnh sửa được chứ.

Các bạn gặp người si mê nào chưa? Bố mẹ dặn con đừng chơi vaping vì thứ đó nguy hiểm, báo chí nói thường xuyên. Con dạ dạ vâng vâng: “Dạ, con hiểu rồi.” Và một ngày bố mẹ được công an gọi báo tin: “Con ông bà đã chết vì vaping.”

Khi người ta ngu thì bạn có nói gì người ta cũng không hiểu. Người si mê, bạn nói lời Chúa lời Phật gì họ cũng chẳng hiểu, và cho rằng đó là những lời nhảm nhí bạn đang lảm nhảm. Thế cho nên, sau mỗi bài giảng, Chúa Giêsu thường nói: “Ai có tai thì nghe” – nghĩa là: “Ai hiểu được thì hiểu. Ai chưa đến lúc hiểu được, thánh linh chưa khai mở, thì không hiểu.”

Nhà Phật cũng nói, khi bạn chưa đủ duyên để hiểu, thì bạn chẳng thể hiểu được.

Việc làm cho người si mê hết si mê hầu như nằm ngoài tầm tay của mọi thầy. Trò đã đủ duyên, đã được thánh linh khai mở, thì trò hiểu. Trò chưa đến lúc, thì thầy biết thầy chẳng làm gì được.

Mình viết trà đàm, ai hiểu được thì hiểu. Ai không hiểu thì chẳng sao cả, chỉ là họ chưa đến lúc hiểu. Mình có thể viết trà đàm, giảng thánh kinh, giảng Phật pháp, nhưng mình chẳng tin là mình giúp được gì cho ai, trừ khi người đó đã đến lúc tự sáng.

Tuy nhiên, “Hãy xin thì sẽ được, hãy tìm thì sẽ thấy, hãy gõ thì cửa sẽ mở. Vì hễ ai xin thì sẽ được, ai tìm thì sẽ thấy, và ai gõ thì sẽ cửa sẽ mở.” (Matthew 7:7-8).

Nếu bạn nghiêm chỉnh và kiên trì tìm ánh sáng, thì ánh sáng sẽ đến trong trái tim bạn và bóng tối si mê tan biến. Để thấy, bạn phải tìm.

Nếu bạn tìm thì sẽ thấy. Nếu bạn không tìm thì bạn si. Chẳng ai có thể giúp bạn.

Si – Ignorance

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

“Si” is the last of the three poisons “Greed, Anger, and Ignorance” but it is not the youngest as people often think – it is the eldest brother, going last to catch everthing from all the younger sipplings going before.

“Ignorant”, speaking frankly, means stupid, idiotic, blind. You are greedy because you are ignorant (si). You are angry because you are ignorant (si). You do bad things because you are ignorant (si). And you are stupid because you are ignorant (si). “Ignogrance” is the cause of all other sins.

“Ignorance” has nothing to do with your IQ’s and knowledge. You may have 5 PhDs in your pocket and still be ignorant. “Ignorance” means non-understanding the profound truths about life, about yourself, about people, and about everything else. Simply put, it is blindness.

In the Bible, Adam ate the forbidden fruit, against God’s command, just because Eve ate it first and gave it to Adam, and he ate it, without asking a single question. If it is not stupidity, then what is that? “Eve took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.” (Genesis 3:6). If it is not stupidity, then it is girl craze. But girl craze is stupidity, nothing else.

Analyzing this way, we can see that stupidity – “ignorance” – covers everything. A greedy person knows he is greedy, an angry person knows he is angry, but a stupid person is hopeless – an ignorant person cannot know he is ignorant. That’s why Buddhists always say that people are si mê – they are ignorant and do not know they are ignorant.

A drunk person does not know he is drunk, a crazy person does not know he is crazy, an ignorant person does not know he is ignorant.

When you are no longer si mê, you will be enlightened. But it is not easy to stop being si mê, because if you do not know that you are si mê, how can you stop being si mê? You have to know how you are, to be able to fix yourself.

Have you ever met someone who is ignorant? The parents told the child not to vape because it is dangerous, the press often talks about it. The child said yes yes yes: “Yes, I understand.” And one day the parents received a call from the police to inform them: “Your child has just been killed by vaping.”

When people are ignorant, no matter what you say, they won’t understand. No matter what you say about God or Buddha, they won’t understand, and they think it’s nonsense that you’re babbling. That’s why, after each sermon, Jesus often said: “He who has ears, let him hear” – meaning: “He who can understand, will understand. He who hasn’t reached the time to understand, the Holy Spirit hasn’t opened his eyes, won’t understand.”

Buddhism also says that when you still don’t have enough causal conditions to understand, you can’t understand.

Making an ignorant person stop being ignorant is almost beyond the reach of every teacher. When the student has had full conditions, the Holy Spirit has opened his eyes, then the student understands. When the student hasn’t reached the time, then the teacher knows that there’s nothing he can do for the student.

I write tea talks, whoever understands, will understand. Whoever doesn’t understand, it doesn’t matter, it’s just that they haven’t reached the time to understand. I can write tea talks, teach the Bible, teach Buddhism, but I don’t believe that I can help anyone, unless that person has reached the time to enlighten himself.

However, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks it will be opened.” (Matthew 7:7-8).

If you earnestly and persistently seek the light, the light will come into your heart and the darkness of ignorance will disappear. To find, you must seek.

If you seek, you will find. If you do not seek, you are ignorant. No one can help you.
