Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Six Super-Knowledges (Lục Thông) are the powers that the Buddhas, the Bodhisattvas, the Enlightened have. However, even if we are not yet a Buddha or Bodhisattva, but we have a high degree of quietness and love in our heart, we may have some degree of Six Super-Knowledges.

The Six Super-Knowledges are:

1. Divine sight (Thiên nhãn thông). This is the power to see any thing in the universe. We may not be able see anything we want in the universe, but we can see a lot of thing other people don’t see: the pains of the poor, the miseries of the oppressed, the ignorance of everyone, people’s lacking food, education, home and security… In general, we can see human sufferings anywhere in the world.

2. Divine hearing (Thiên nhĩ thông). We can hear all the human sufferings anywhere in the world.

3. Mental telepathy (Tha tâm thông): the ability to read others’ thoughts. If we see and hear people’s sufferings, we very much can read the thinking of the sufferers and the ignorant, including the wrong-doers and the oppressors.

4. Psychic travel (Thần túc thông): the ability to go anywhere. If we are loving and peaceful, we can cross all the defensive fences that people build to fight against one another, to be their friends and their peacemakers.

5. Knowing past and future of self and others (Túc mạng thông). If we know people and their suffering and ignorance, we very much can see their past and their future.

6. Power to end contamination of self (Lậu tận thông). When we have a quiet and loving heart, we are no longer in the prison of greed, hatred and ignorance – no more tham sân si.

So when our heart is quiet and loving, we may have a bit of the Six Super-Knowledges of the Enlightened.
