Rescuing a baby barn swallow

Sapa corner

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

One morning in mid-April, while my parents and I were in our kitchen, we heard the chirping sound of a barn swallow couple.

As usual, we thought this couple just sang cheerful songs to start a new day and send love to their newborn babies. However, the sound of these birds got more urgent, louder, and longer. They even glided around their nest under the kitchen porch roof as if they wanted to alert something.

When my mom looked at the nest, she spotted a baby chick nearly falling out of it. The chick’s right leg was stuck on the edge of the nest, while its head, wings, and the other leg were upside down and towards the ground.

At that point, my mom quickly called out my dad to save the chick. My dad wore a pair of textile gloves. He opened the kitchen window and approached the nestling. When the barn swallow parents saw my dad, they were so scared. We tried to calm them down by saying: “Don’t worry, birds. We won’t harm your baby”.

In just a few minutes, my dad could touch the chickling. He gently put it back into the roost. When the birds found that their chick was safe, they flapped their wings with joy and took care of the little one.

After one month since the fortunate day, the birdy is still alive. It now has become a fledgling and started learning to fly a short distance with its family members.

Sharing with you.

Have a blessed day.

With loving-kindness,

An An
