Sunday, Jesus has resurrected. This day is celebrated as Easter today.

The Empty Tomb

20 Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance. ² So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have put him!”

“We” seems to mean Mary went with someone, possibly Martha, Mary’s sister, or/and someone else.

Mary Magdalene’s role as the first believer to discover the empty tomb is deeply significant, both theologically and symbolically. Here’s why:

Friday. Today, it is celebrated as Good Friday.

Jesus Sentenced to Be Crucified

19 Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged. ² The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They clothed him in a purple robe ³ and went up to him again and again, saying, “Hail, king of the Jews!” And they slapped him in the face.

This scene is deeply symbolic and profoundly tragic. The crown of thorns and the purple robe are mocking imitations of royal regalia. In their cruel jest, the Roman soldiers unwittingly highlight the truth of Jesus’ kingship. While they ridicule Him as the “King of the Jews,” the Gospels affirm that He is indeed the Messiah and King, but not in the earthly, political sense they assume.

Chapters 13 to 17 contain Jesus’ teachings during the Last Supper,
which took place on Thursday, now celebrated as Holy Thursday.

Still Thursday night, after leaving the Last Supper. In the Garden of Gethsemane. And Friday cames near the end of this chapter. This Friday today is celebrated as Good Friday, the day Jesus died.

Jesus Arrested

18 When he had finished praying, Jesus left with his disciples and crossed the Kidron Valley. On the other side there was a garden, and he and his disciples went into it.

The name of the garden is Gethsemane.

² Now Judas, who betrayed him, knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with his disciples. ³ So Judas came to the garden, guiding a detachment of soldiers and some officials from the chief priests and the Pharisees. They were carrying torches, lanterns and weapons.

High Priest Prayer

This chapter contains Jesus’ prayer often called High Priest Prayer, because Jesus acts as a mediator, interceding on behalf of His disciples and all believers, much like a high priest would in the Old Testament.

The High Priest Prayer can be divided into three parts:

Jesus Prays for Himself (John 17:1–5):
Jesus begins by asking God to glorify Him so that He may glorify the Father. He acknowledges the completion of His earthly mission to reveal God to humanity and asks to return to the glory He shared with the Father before the world began.

At the end of John 14, Jesus says, “Come now, let us leave,” which suggests a transition or departure from the room where the Last Supper took place. However, Chapters 15 through 17 continue with Jesus delivering extended teachings (such as the Vine and the Branches metaphor in John 15) and His High Priestly Prayer in John 17. These chapters seem to flow seamlessly, without an explicit mention of a change in location.

Jesus Comforts His Disciples

14 “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God^[a]; believe also in me. ² My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? ³ And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. ⁴ You know the way to the place where I am going.”

Jesus Anointed at Bethany

12 Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus lived, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. ² Here a dinner was given in Jesus’ honor. Martha served, while Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with him. ³ Then Mary took about a pint^[a] of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus’ feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.

This is an image of love taken to the extreme. Perhaps Mary knew that Jesus was about to die, so she did something to express how much she loved Jesus and how much she was in pain.

The Death of Lazarus

11 Now a man named Lazarus was sick. He was from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. ² (This Mary, whose brother Lazarus now lay sick, was the same one who poured perfume on the Lord and wiped his feet with her hair.) ³ So the sisters sent word to Jesus, “Lord, the one you love is sick.”

⁴ When he heard this, Jesus said, “This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God’s glory so that God’s Son may be glorified through it.” ⁵ Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. ⁶ So when he heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed where he was two more days, ⁷ and then he said to his disciples, “Let us go back to Judea.”

The Good Shepherd and His Sheep

10 “Very truly I tell you Pharisees, anyone who does not enter the sheep pen by the gate, but climbs in by some other way, is a thief and a robber. ² The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. ³ The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. ⁴ When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice. ⁵ But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger’s voice.” ⁶ Jesus used this figure of speech, but the Pharisees did not understand what he was telling them.

In the ancient Near East, as well as in some places today, it is not unusual for multiple flocks of sheep to graze together in the same field or share a communal pen. Despite the mingling, when it comes time to separate them, each flock responds only to the voice of its own shepherd.

Jesus Heals a Man Born Blind

9 As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth. ² His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”

³ “Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him. ⁴ As long as it is day, we must do the works of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work. ⁵ While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”

⁶ After saying this, he spit on the ground, made some mud with the saliva, and put it on the man’s eyes. ⁷ “Go,” he told him, “wash in the Pool of Siloam” (this word means “Sent”). So the man went and washed, and came home seeing.

¹ but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.

The Mount of Olives is a significant location in the Bible and holds historical and religious importance. It’s a mountain ridge located east of Jerusalem, separating the city from the Judean Desert.

In the Bible, the Mount of Olives is frequently mentioned in the New Testament. It is the site where Jesus often went to pray and where important events in His life took place, including the Ascension, where He is said to have ascended to heaven after His resurrection.

Additionally, the Mount of Olives has been a place of pilgrimage and worship for centuries, with many churches and religious sites dotting its landscape. It’s also mentioned in the Old Testament, such as in the prophecy of Zechariah, which speaks of the Lord standing on the Mount of Olives.

² At dawn he appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat down to teach them. ³ The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group ⁴ and said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. ⁵ In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?” ⁶ They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him.

Jesus Goes to the Festival of Tabernacles

7 After this, Jesus went around in Galilee. He did not want^[a] to go about in Judea because the Jewish leaders there were looking for a way to kill him. ² But when the Jewish Festival of Tabernacles was near, ³ Jesus’ brothers said to him, “Leave Galilee and go to Judea, so that your disciples there may see the works you do. ⁴ No one who wants to become a public figure acts in secret. Since you are doing these things, show yourself to the world.” ⁵ For even his own brothers did not believe in him.

Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand

6 Some time after this, Jesus crossed to the far shore of the Sea of Galilee (that is, the Sea of Tiberias), ² and a great crowd of people followed him because they saw the signs he had performed by healing the sick. ³ Then Jesus went up on a mountainside and sat down with his disciples. ⁴ The Jewish Passover Festival was near.

⁵ When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip, “Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?” ⁶ He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do.

Jesus Talks With a Samaritan Woman

4 Now Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that he was gaining and baptizing more disciples than John— ² although in fact it was not Jesus who baptized, but his disciples. ³ So he left Judea and went back once more to Galilee.

⁴ Now he had to go through Samaria. ⁵ So he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph. ⁶ Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about noon.
