Since November, more than 1,500 refugees have arrived in Indonesia’s Aceh province, triggering anger among the locals.

Over 300 Rohingya refugees have arrived on the coast of Aceh province in Indonesia after weeks of drifting across the sea from Bangladesh.

The emaciated survivors – children, women and men – told of running out of supplies and of fearing death at sea as they landed on the unwelcoming shores of the villages of Pidie and Aceh Besar in the pre-dawn hours of Sunday morning.

“The boat was sinking. We had no food or water left,” told Shahidul Islam, a 34-year-old survivor, saying he had left from a refugee camp in Bangladesh.

A group of 180 refugees arrived by boat at 3am local time (20:00 GMT on Saturday) on a beach in the Pidie regency of Aceh province.

The second boat carrying 135 refugees landed in neighbouring Aceh Besar regency hours later after being adrift at sea for more than a month, while a third boat is missing.

‘Cancel culture’ or corporate cowardice?

Cancel culture, the online trend of calling out people, celebrities, brands and organizations – rightly or wrongly – for perceived social indiscretions or offensive behaviors, has become a polarizing topic of debate.

To some, it’s an important means of social justice and holding powerful figures to account. But to others, it’s often “misused and misdirected” and has become a form of mob rule.

But one country wants to put an end to the deeply contested online phenomena by introducing what legal experts and observers say would be the world’s first law against cancel culture – raising alarm among rights activists who fear that such legal powers could be used to stifle free speech.

Over the past year, Singapore’s government has been “looking at ways to deal with cancel culture,” a spokesperson told CNN – amid what some say is a brewing culture war between gay rights supporters and the religious right following the recent decriminalization of homosexuality in the largely conservative city-state.

The U.S. Department of State submits reports on all countries receiving assistance and all United Nations member states to the U.S. Congress in accordance with the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961 and the Trade Act of 1974.

For nearly 50 years, the Country Reports on Human Rights Practices have served as a vital resource for governments, researchers, advocacy groups, journalists, and voices of conscience worldwide that work to promote respect for human rights and accountability for injustice.  The individual reports cover 198 countries and territories, providing factual, objective information based on credible reports of the events that occurred throughout 2022.  These reports are meticulously compiled by U.S. Department of State employees in Washington, D.C., and at our overseas missions throughout the world, who collectively spend thousands of hours preparing the reports using credible information from U.S. embassies and consulates abroad, foreign government officials, nongovernmental and international organizations, jurists and legal experts, journalists, academics, human rights defenders, labor activists, and published reports.  We take seriously our responsibility to ensure their accuracy.

ICC chief prosecutor reacts to Putin arrest warrant

The International Criminal Court’s chief prosecutor believes Russian President Vladimir Putin could stand trial for alleged crimes committed during Russia’s war in Ukraine, he told CNN on Friday, despite Moscow’s arguments that it is not subject to the court’s decisions.

In an interview with CNN’s Clarissa Ward, Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan pointed to historic trials of Nazi war criminals, former Yugoslavian President Slobodan Milošević, and former Liberian leader Charles Taylor, among others.

“All of them were mighty, powerful individuals and yet they found themselves in courtrooms,” he said.

Chuyện 2 nữ sinh cầu cứu trước cánh cửa đại học

Mái ấm truyền tin là một cơ sở từ thiện nuôi dưỡng trẻ em mồ côi, trẻ em dân tộc thiểu số điều kiện khó khăn, không nơi nương tựa đóng tại quận Bình Tân, TPHCM, đã hoạt động từ năm 1995 tới nay. Thực tế nhiều em đã được nuôi dưỡng, cho học hành tới trưởng thành từ ngôi nhà chung này, đi làm, lập gia đình… Trong hơn 20 năm hoạt động, mỗi năm mái ấm tiếp nhận, giúp đỡ trên dưới 20 trẻ nhỏ có hoàn cảnh éo le như vậy.

Mục tiêu của những người hoạt động thiện nguyện tại mái ấm là chăm lo để trẻ có thể hòa nhập cộng đồng, được đến trường học hành với môi trường giáo dục đảm bảo. Dù vậy, cơ sở từng gặp rất nhiều khó khăn để có được giấy phép hoạt động.

TTCT – Liệu những “hàng rào kỹ thuật” như quy định về đăng ký thường trú (và trước đây là hộ khẩu) có tác dụng ngăn cản dòng di cư vào đô thị lớn?

Mới đây, việc lập dự thảo quy định công dân làm thủ tục đăng ký thường trú phải có chỗ ở hợp pháp tối thiểu 8m2 đối nhà ở có nguồn gốc sở hữu nhà nước và 20m2 đối với nhà ở còn lại tiếp tục cho thấy chính sách thường trú ở Hà Nội khác biệt với các khu vực khác, cũng như nỗ lực cố gắng hạn chế dân số đăng ký thường trú vào đây.
