HANOI: Vietnam on Thursday denounced Taiwan’s military drills on and around a disputed South China Sea island, labelling them a serious violation of its sovereignty and a threat to maritime security.

France, Japan back free navigation in Asia-Pacific, Abe says

France and Japan support a “free and open maritime order” in the Asia-Pacific region, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said after talks with French President Francois Hollande on Monday.

The message seemed aimed at China, which claims almost all the South China Sea and which has fueled concern in Japan and the West with its growing military presence in the waterway.

He spoke in response to reports that China had opened an illegal tourism route to Hoàng Sa (Paracel) Archipelago and that a Chinese coast guard vessel had pursued a Vietnamese fishing ship, coded QNg 95215 TS, in the area of Bạch Quy (Passu Keah) Island in Hoàng Sa.

Marine Corps to Protect China’s Growing Interest in Asia-Pacific Region

Bộ Nông nghiệp Trung Quốc ngày 27/2 đơn phương thông báo lệnh cấm đánh bắt cá ở Biển Đông từ 12h ngày 1/5 đến 12h ngày 16/8. Phạm vi cấm đánh bắt cá do Trung Quốc đơn phương vạch ra trên Biển Đông là từ 12 độ vĩ Bắc đến Vịnh Bắc Bộ và “giao tuyến hải vực Mân Áo”, tức vùng biển từ Phúc Kiến đến Quảng Đông, tọa độ từ 117º31’37.40″E,23º09’42.60″N đến 120º50’43″E,21º54’15″N). Lệnh cấm này cũng được áp dụng ở Vịnh Bắc Bộ, vùng biển Bột Hải, Hoàng Hải và Đông Hải.

While China’s expansion of its seven outposts in the Spratly Islands has dominated headlines since large-scale dredging began at the end of 2013, efforts to upgrade its capabilities in the Paracels farther north have received relatively little attention. But the island chain plays a key role in China’s goal of establishing surveillance and power projection capabilities throughout the South China Sea. To this end, Beijing has undertaken substantial upgrades of its military infrastructure in the Paracels.

Less than a year ago Vietnam was counting on U.S. support in building up a defense against China. Vietnam and China have clashed over land for centuries. Now the Asian neighbors bitterly dispute much of the sea closest to their shores, with China taking more control as the world’s No. 2 economy and No. 3 military power. U.S. ex-president Barack Obama, probably hoping to contain China, lifted a decades-old ban on arms sales to Vietnam last year and from 2014 to 2016 his government spent $46 million on upgrading Vietnam’s military.

China plans to block foreign ships from waters it claims as its own

Foreign submarines passing through these waters would be required to surface and fly national flags.

China has announced plans to revise a 34-year-old maritime safety law and start banning some foreign ships from its territorial waters in 2020.
