Nhưng than ôi!

I noticed Mac Shin with y curiosity because he was Chinese, and one of the two intelligence agents who arrived at the Tan Trao war zone even before the “Deer Team”. In every story, at every moment, Mac Shin always spoke of President Ho Chi Minh with respect. He called the late President with a beloved name – Uncle Ho. On May 10, 2008, in Seattle, Vietnamese Deputy Ambassador to the US Nguyen Tien Minh came and presented the medal “For Peace, Friendship among Nations” to him. But who is Mac Shin? Not many people in Vietnam or the US know his name as well as his relationship with President Ho Chi Minh. Continue reading on CVD >>

It is early days, granted, but the Philippines’ crude and crass new president Rodrigo Duterte appears increasingly intent on reversing his predecessor’s plucky South China Sea policy and pro-Alliance leanings, opting instead for a tilt towards China.

The Philippines’ proclivity to flip-flop in its great power relations reflects various factors. One is the absence of a strategic tradition. This is evident in the priority accorded by Duterte to domestic challenges over external security, even when the latter extends to China’s strategic encroachment within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone, a legal violation explicitly flagged by The Hague arbitral ruling. Another is the disproportionate attention occupied by the US, Manila’s treaty ally. This has a distorting quality, be it along ‘pro’ or ‘anti’ alliance lines.

Whale of a problem: US Defense Secretary Mark Esper extends support to Vietnam, but ExxonMobil may leave the Vietnamese exploration block known as ‘Blue Whale’

HANOI: With repeated Chinese intrusions into oil-rich Vanguard Bank and anticipated departure of ExxonMobil from the Blue Whale project, the South China Sea dispute has reached a turning point. A planned meeting between presidents Donald Trump and Nguyễn Phú Trọng could be pivotal for a strategic partnership, but is unlikely to happen any time soon.

Usually, she only makes about a third of that, taking home roughly $2.50, which is all she has to buy food for her four children and elderly father, for whom she is the sole support after divorcing her husband a few years ago because of his drug addiction.
