USIP-JR Senior Fellowship

The Jennings Randolph (JR) Senior Fellowship provides scholars, policy analysts, policy makers, journalists, and other experts with opportunities to spend time in residence at the Institute, reflecting and writing on pressing international peace and security challenges. Senior Fellowships usually last for ten months, starting in October, but shorter-term fellowships are also available. Fellowships are open to citizens of any country. Priority is given to proposals deemed likely to make timely and significant contributions to the understanding and resolution of ongoing and emerging conflicts and other challenges to international peace and security. Applications are invited from all disciplines and professions.

USIP-Annual Grant Competition

USIP provides the analysis, training and tools that prevent and end conflicts, promotes stability and professionalizes the field of peacebuilding.

The Grant Program increases the breadth and depth of the Institute’s work by supporting peacebuilding projects managed by non-profit organizations including educational institutions, research institutions, and civil society organizations.

In over twenty years of grantmaking, the Grant Program’s Annual Grant Competition and Priority Grant Competition have received nearly 10,000 applications and awarded almost 2,000 grants. The Institute has provided funding to grantees located in 46 U.S. states and the District of Columbia, and in 81 foreign countries.

Singapore-MIT Alliance Graduate Fellowship

Application period: May 17 through July 17, 2010

The Singapore Ministry of Education has established 100 four-year fellowships for new doctoral students at NTU or NUS who will conduct their research at the Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology Centre (SMART Centre).

The establishment of this Fellowship Programme is intended to attract to NTU and NUS the best and most talented doctoral students from Singapore, the region, and beyond and educate them to be future leaders in science and technology for Singapore and beyond. The Fellowship will provide them with the opportunity to be involved in the strategic research programmes at the SMART Centre and provide them with the opportunity to be co-advised by an MIT faculty member. The student may spend up to six months doing research at MIT.

UN.GIFT: Business Leaders Award

The private sector is an indispensable partner in the global fight against human trafficking. Any national or international strategy to combat human trafficking cannot be successful and effective without the dedicated involvement of the business community in eradicating the practice.

To honour business leaders who take an active stand against human trafficking, End Human Trafficking Now!, the Global Initiative to Fight Human Trafficking (UN.GIFT) and the United Nations Global Compact are together establishing a new international award, “Business Leaders against Human Trafficking”.

Mario Savio Award

Mario Savio, a man of brilliance, compassion, and humor, came to public notice as a spokesman for the Free Speech Movement at the University of California in 1964. Having spent the summer as a civil rights worker in segregationist Mississippi, Savio returned to Berkeley at a time when students throughout the country were beginning to mobilize in support of racial justice and against the deepening American involvement in Vietnam.

This award, which carries a cash prize of $6000, is presented each year to a young person (or persons) with a deep commitment to human rights and social justice and a proven ability to transform this commitment into effective action. The recipients should have demonstrated leadership abiliy, creativity, and integrity. The cash award is divided equally between the individual recipient and an organization of his/her choosing.

Vì lý do bảo vệ an ninh cho ĐCN và cũng để tập trung năng lượng của chúng ta, sau đây là một vài điểm chính về chính sách mới về bài vở của Đọt Chuối Non.

1. Tất cả mọi bài đều phải nằm trong slogan của ĐCN–“Tư duy tích cực mỗi ngày”.

Các bài thơ và văn mà chúng ta thường đăng trên ĐCN, dù là hay nhưng thường không nằm trong mục đích tư duy tích cực mỗi ngày. Các bài này sẽ bị ảnh hưởng dưới chính sách mới.

Đa số các thiền thi và thánh thi được xem như đủ tiêu chuẩn tư duy tích cực.

Đa số các bài về văn hóa và lịch sử Việt Nam, được xem như đủ tiêu chuẩn tư duy tích cực.

Các bản nhạc thường nằm trong chuyên mục “Văn Hóa”, giúp ta hiểu biết thêm về văn hóa, cho nên nếu không tiêu cực và ủy mi, thì có thể chấp nhận được.

Tập trung ý hướng bài vở như thế này có thể làm giảm lượng bài vở rất nhiều, cho nên ĐCN sẽ phải chậm lại. Không sao, chúng ta cần quan tâm đến phẩm chứ không cần lượng.

2. Tạm thời, vừa để duy trì an ninh vừa để định hình cho đường hướng bài vở mới, mình sẽ là admin duy nhất. Xin các bạn gởi bài trực tiếp đến mình tại tdhoanh@gmail.com.

Tùy theo điều gì sẽ xảy ra, chúng ta sẽ tiếp tục thay đổi để quản lý ĐCN với các biện pháp tối ưu. Cho nên chính sách gì ta nói hôm nay chỉ có hiệu lực cho đến khi có thay đổi. Chẳng có gì vĩnh viễn. Planning on the move. 🙂

UNU-IRA-INAT-ICARDA-CAREERI-ALRC-GM Scholarship

The Joint Master’s Degree (MSc) Programme on Integrated Drylands Management is offered jointly through the partnership between the United Nations University (UNU), Institut des Régions Arides (IRA), Cold and Arid Regions Environmental and Engineering Research Institute (CAREERI), the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA), Institut National Agronomique de Tunisie (INAT) Tottori University (TU), and the Global Mechanism (GM) of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD).

The MS Programme is designed to enhance the capacity of developing countries to manage their drylands resources. It is intended to provide young professionals and scientists an international perspective on resource management approaches in drylands. Students enrolled in the 2010-2011 programme will attend a 4-week intense course at CAREERI facilities in Lanzhou, China from 13 September – 12 October 2010. Upon completion of the course work and approval of the research proposal, students will carry out their field research which will be hosted by one of the partner organizations. The students are also required to complete a research project in their home country. The MS Programme is jointly offered by the seven partner institutions as an internationally accepted degree.

Conservation International Indigenous Leaders Conservation Fellowship

The Indigenous Leaders Conservation Fellowship is sponsored by Conservation International to create opportunities for leaders and scholars from indigenous and traditional peoples communities and organizations to explore solutions to the impacts of climate change and the threats to ecosystems and biodiversity that are affecting their lands, communities and livelihoods.

The program will focus on supporting the fellow’s research and demonstration of the contribution of traditional knowledge in adapting to climate change and maintaining healthy ecosystems, and how that knowledge can work with science and new technologies to influence policy and action.

This year-long fellowship will be offered to four candidates. Two fellowships will be awarded within the topic of Biodiversity, and two within the topic of Climate Change.

UNEP-WCMC Chevening MPhil Scholarships

GEMMA Scholarships

GEMMA is the first Erasmus Mundus Master in Women’s and Gender Studies in Europe. It is, therefore, a master of excellence supported by the European Commission which selected it as Erasmus Mundus from within 160 project proposals for 2006.

GEMMA is the achievement of long years of efforts trying to advance in the tuning of our diverse educational structures and create common curricula in Women’s and Gender Studies. The Third World Organization for Women in Science (TWOWS) with funds generously provided by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), has instituted a fellowship programme for female students from Sub-Saharan Africa and Least Developed Countries (LDCs), who wish to pursue postgraduate training leading to a Ph.D., at centres of excellence in the South (developing countries), outside their own country. The general purpose of the scheme is to contribute to the emergence of a new generation of women leaders in science and technology, and to promote their effective participation in the scientific and technological development of their countries.

TWAS Fellowships for postgraduate, postdoctoral and advanced research

TWAS, the academy of sciences for the developing world is an autonomous international organization founded in Trieste, Italy, in 1983. TWAS represents the best of science in the developing world. Its principal aim is to promote scientific capacity and excellence for sustainable development in the South. Since 1986, TWAS has been supporting scientists and institutions in developing countries through a wide range of programmes that focus on scientific capacity building largely through South-South cooperation.

The administration and financial operation of TWAS is undertaken by UNESCO in accordance with an agreement signed by the two organizations.Each year, the TWAS Fellowship Programme, which operates under agreements with governments and national organizations in developing countries – and particularly with partners in Brazil, China, India, Malaysia, Mexico and Pakistan – offers a number of fellowships to young scientists from developing countries to carry out postgraduate research in countries other than their own.

What drove a company of American soldiers — ordinary young men deployed on what they understood to be a combat mission — to murder more than 300 unarmed Vietnamese civilians? Were they “just following orders,” as some later declared? Or, as others argued, did they break under the pressure of a misguided military strategy that measured victory by body count? Today, as the United States once again finds itself questioning the morality of actions taken in the name of war, Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Barak Goodman (“The Lobotomist,” “Scottsboro: An American Tragedy”) focuses his lens on the 1968 My Lai massacre, its subsequent cover-up and the heroic efforts of the soldiers who broke ranks to try to halt the atrocities. “My Lai” draws upon eyewitness accounts of Vietnamese survivors and men of the Charlie Company 11th Infantry Brigade and recently discovered audio recordings from the Peers Inquiry to recount one of the darkest chapters of the Vietnam War.

TWOWS Postgraduate Fellowships

An Asia Arts Event entitled Music of Vietnam: Traditional Solo Music for Strings

performed by two of Vietnam’s most esteemed musicians, Ms. Nguyễn Thanh Thủy and Ms. Ngô Trà My.

Nguyễn Thanh Thuỷ, a master of the traditional Vietnamese đàn tranh (16-string zither), graduated from the Hanoi Conservatory of Music in 1998 in đàn tranh, and got her master at the Institute of Vietnamese Folklore in 2002. She won an Odon Vallet scholarship in 2002, and Arts Network Asia scholarship in 2003. She won a series of first prizes in the national traditional Vietnamese music competitions. She is currently teaching đàn Tranh at the Vietnam National Academy of Music while active in traditional and experimental music. She performing widely in Europe and Asia. She also participates in international researching program ‘Rethinking Improvisation’. She has recorded in many CDs.

Ngô Trà My, is a master of the famous traditional Vietnamese đàn bầu (a one-string instrument). She currently lectures on đàn bầu at the Hanoi National Conservatory of Music and the Malmö Academy of Music in Sweden. She got her diploma on đàn bầu in 1994 and a master in Musical Pedagogy in 2007. She performs widely in Europe, U.S., Australia and Asia. She is a member of the Six Tones group, and the ASIAN-Korea Traditional Orchestra and its Representatives Committee. She has recorded solo and in instrumental chamber music in many CDs and DVDs, and most noticeable, Lời ru quê hương “Lullabies for my home land.”

Ðàn Tranh (16-string zither) and đàn Bầu (monochord) are popular traditional instruments in Vietnam music thousands of years old.

Grand Challenges in Global Health initiative

Unorthodox thinking is essential to overcoming the most persistent challenges in global health. Vaccines were first developed over 200 years ago because revolutionary thinkers took an entirely new approach to preventing disease. Grand Challenges Explorations fosters innovation in global health research. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has committed $100 million to encourage scientists worldwide to expand the pipeline of ideas to fight our greatest health challenges. Launched in 2008, Grand Challenge Explorations grants have already been awarded to 262 researchers from 30 countries.

The grant program is open to anyone from any discipline, from student to tenured professor, and from any organization – colleges and universities, government laboratories, research institutions, non-profit organizations and for-profit companies.

The initiative uses an agile, accelerated grant-making process with short two-page applications and no preliminary data required. Applications are submitted online, and winning grants are chosen approximately 4 months from the submission deadline. Initial grants of $100,000 are awarded two times a year. Successful projects have the opportunity to receive a follow-on grant of up to $1 million.

Endeavour Awards for Research, Postgraduate study or research, Vocational education and training, Professional Development and Student Exchanges

Open on 5 April 2010 and will close on 31 July 2010

The Endeavour Awards is an internationally competitive, merit-based program providing opportunities for citizens of the Asia-Pacific region to undertake study, research and professional development in Australia. Awards are also available for Australians to do the same abroad.

The aims of the Endeavour Awards are to:

Deepen Australia’s global engagement in education and research;

Reinforce Australia’s reputation as a high quality education provider and leader in research, innovation and knowledge management;

Enhance language skills and cultural understanding of Australia; and

Provide opportunities for Australian professionals to enhance their skills and knowledge.

As part of Australian Scholarships, the Endeavour Awards promote excellence in education. Australian Scholarships brings together under one umbrella, scholarships administered by the Australian Government Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations and AusAID, the Australian Agency for International Development. Australian Scholarships aims to build mutual understanding between Australia and its Asia-Pacific neighbours.
