Severe subsidence and erosion afflict Vietnam’s southernmost province

Tran Van Thoi District of the Mekong Delta’s Ca Mau Province has suffered around 340 cases of subsidence and soil erosion along river and canal routes in the past two months.

Severe subsidence and erosion afflict Vietnam's southernmost province

Nearly 100 meters of embankment in front of the office of Khanh Hung Commune in Tran Van Thoi District experienced severe subsidence on Feb. 20, with the deepest collapse measured at 2 m.

Since the beginning of the year, the district has recorded about 340 cases of subsidence and soil erosion, stretching a total length of 9 km, and causing damages of over VND13 billion (US$528,000).

Duong Tan Truoc, CEO of an HCMC-based company, received a VND1.5 trillion ($60.85 million) bonus from Truong My Lan for helping the chairwoman of disgraced property developer Van Thinh Phat steal VND4.75 trillion from lender SCB.

Truoc, aged 41, is scheduled for trial in HCMC on March 5 with 85 others, facing embezzlement charges.

Vietnam strongly opposes acts of violations of its sovereignty over Vanguard Bank, the foreign ministry said Thursday.

“The Vanguard Bank is a part of Vietnam’s continental shelf, established in accordance with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS),” said spokeswoman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Pham Thu Hang in a Thursday press meet.

She was responding to inquiries about China sending its coast guard vessel to the area recently.

Using the IELTS for high school admission is unfair: education ministry

Inferring advantages for students with IELTS scores in the high school admission process may breed inequality, as not everyone has the means to study and take the test, the education ministry said.

Nguyen Xuan Thanh, head of the Department of Secondary Education under the Ministry of Education and Training, said there are four groups of students eligible for high school admission without taking the entrance exams in accordance with regulations from 2014: students at ethnic minority boarding schools; students of ethnic minorities; disabled students; and students with national prizes regarding culture, art, sports and science.

Certain other student groups get bonus points during the admission process, including children of war martyrs and invalids, as well as those living in areas with dire socioeconomic circumstances.

The Palestinian Authority’s prime minister announced his government’s resignation on Monday, seen as the first step in a reform process urged by the United States as part of its latest ambitious plans to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

But it will do little to address the authority’s longstanding lack of legitimacy among its own people or its strained relations with Israel. Both pose major obstacles to U.S. plans calling for the PA, which administers parts of the Israeli-occupied West Bank, to govern postwar Gaza ahead of eventual statehood.

Là người Cơ Tu, sinh ra và lớn lên ở dãy Trường Sơn hùng vĩ và huyền thoại, từ nhỏ mình đã theo chân cha đi rừng, nghe cha kể chuyện rừng sâu nơi không ai dám tới.

Năm 2015, mình đậu Đại học Nông lâm Huế chuyên ngành lâm nghiệp. Bỏ lại rừng núi phía sau, mình gói ghém đồ đạc ra đi với mong muốn thay đổi cuộc đời.

Five former Saigon Commercial Bank executives who are abroad face trial for allegedly helping Truong My Lan misappropriate money and cause losses of VND488 trillion ($19.83 billion) to the lender.

The five, including two former chairpersons, have been ordered by the People’s Court of HCMC to turn themselves in before the trial on March 5 failing which they will be tried in absentia.

The five are former chairman and chairwoman Dinh Van Thanh and Nguyen Thi Thu Suong, former deputy CEO Chiem Minh Dung, former director Tram Thich Ton, and former manager of a branch, Nguyen Lam Anh Vu.

The five face trial for violating bank regulations, and Thanh is also charged with embezzlement.

TTCT – Năm 2023 đối với cá nhân tôi đáng nhớ vì vào cuối năm xảy ra sự cố Gaza. Dĩ nhiên đây là về mặt chủ quan cá nhân vì tôi có nhiều gắn bó với khu vực và có nhiều quan hệ với người Palestine tị nạn ở Lebanon và nước ngoài.

Dẫu vậy, tôi chưa hề đặt chân lên lãnh thổ Palestine.

Lebanon là một trong những quốc gia còn trong tình trạng chiến tranh với Israel và mỗi bận tôi nhập cảnh Lebanon là công an cửa khẩu lật sổ thông hành của tôi ra dò kỹ từng trang. Nếu bạn có con dấu Israel là họ không cho bạn vào. 

Mỗi bận như vậy, tôi nói thách anh tìm ra con dấu vì tôi sẽ chỉ đặt chân đến lãnh thổ đó ngày nào có một nhà nước Palestine độc lập và chủ quyền. Các anh cười nhưng lần nào cũng vẫn dò tìm con dấu tiếp.
