Disney hit by backlash after thanking Xinjiang authorities in 'Mulan' credits

Hong Kong (CNN Business)Disney has publicly thanked a Chinese government agency accused of human rights abuses in Xinjiang for its help in making “Mulan” — a revelation that has provoked a storm of criticism online.

Disney (DIS) acknowledges several Chinese government bodies in the credits for the live-action remake of the 1998 animated picture of the same name, but a few in particular have raised red flags: The Xinjiang government’s publicity department and the Public Security and Tourism bureaus for Turpan, a city of about 633,400 people just outside Xinjiang’s capital Urumqi.Disney did not respond to a request for comment from CNN Business to its media inquiry line, and to US press officers about the film and the credits.

President Ho Chi Minh’s Stilt House in Hanoi

VNExpressHo Chi Minh’s Stilt House, the living and working space of the former president, is a popular historic site in Hanoi for both Vietnamese and foreign travelers.

Built in 1958, the tile-roofed stilt house has a single floor and measures 10.5 metres in perimeter (??) and 6.2 metres in height. It resembles the style of the traditional of the Tay – Thai ethnic stilt house in Viet Bac, the northernmost region of Vietnam consisting of six provinces, Cao Bang, Bac Kan, Lang Son, Ha Giang, Tuyen Quang, and Thai Nguyen. Prior to the construction of the house, Ho Chi Minh, known affectionately as Uncle Ho, had discussed its design thoroughly with its architect, Nguyen Van Ninh. He wanted it to resemble his previous stilt house in Viet Bac, with the ground floor being open and the first having a study and a bedroom and a wall with a bookcase and surrounded by a verandah. Uncle Ho lived and worked here from 1958 until his death in 1969. It witnessed many monumental decisions made for the country, making it an architectural, cultural and political heritage of Vietnam.

Built in 1958, the tile-roofed stilt house at 1 Hoang Hoa Tham Street in Ba Dinh District has a single floor and measures 10.5 metres in length and 6.2 metres in width. It resembles the style of the traditional of the Tay – Thai ethnic stilt houses in Viet Bac, the northernmost region of Vietnam consisting of six provinces, Cao Bang, Bac Kan, Lang Son, Ha Giang, Tuyen Quang, and Thai Nguyen. Viet Bac was the name of the region in the time of war against the French colonists (1945-1954).

The order cited need to secure the information and communications technology and services supply chain, and asserted that “spread in the United States of mobile applications developed and owned by companies in China continues to threaten the national security, foreign policy, and economy of the United States”.

Nhu cầu sử dụng năng lượng của Việt Nam đang tăng nhanh, trong khi các nguồn năng lượng nội địa sớm cạn kiệt: thủy điện cơ bản hết; than, dầu, khí không nhiều, những năm gần đây đã phải nhập than cho sản xuất điện số lượng lớn, năng lượng tái tạo tuy có tiềm năng khá nhưng để sử dụng hiệu quả còn nhiều bất cập, do đó, nguồn hạt nhân cần quan tâm xác minh đầy đủ hơn.

The World Records Union (WorldKings) has acknowledged five world culinary records set by Vietnam.

The country has the largest number (164) of “strand and broth” dishes in the world such as traditional noodles pho, Hue-style beef noodles and Quang-style noodles, and the most kinds (100) of mam, or salted fish, and dishes made from it, WorldKings announced on its website this week.

Bộ Điện tử và Công nghệ thông tin nước này cho rằng các ứng dụng tham gia vào hoạt động gây phương hại đến chủ quyền và tính toàn vẹn của đất nước. Nhà chức trách cũng cáo buộc các dịch vụ gửi dữ liệu công dân sang máy chủ đặt ngoài Ấn Độ.

Theo ghi nhận của PV vào sáng 5/9, đường Phạm Văn Đồng hướng đi vào sân bay Tân Sơn Nhất có nhiều cây bị trơ trụi.

Những cây sao đen cao khoảng 10-15m gần như không còn lá. Trong khi đó, ở những cây liền kề, nhiều nhánh cũng đã trơ trụi.

The U.S. plans to set up a Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative Academy (YSEALI) next year at the Fulbright University Vietnam in Ho Chi Minh City.

It will cost $5 million, the U.S.’s Assistant Secretary for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, David R. Stilwell, announced at a virtual event held in HCMC on Friday.

It will offer capacity-building seminars to entry- to mid-level professionals aged 25-40 from across Southeast Asia on themes like technology and innovation, public policy and entrepreneurship.

Institutional racism and systemic racism are terms bandied about these days without much clarity. Being 84 years of age, I have seen and lived through what might be called institutional racism or systemic racism. Both operate under the assumption that one race is superior to another. It involves the practice of treating a person or group of people differently based on their race.
