Chào anh chị em,

Nếu bạn nói bạn là người Việt vô thần, thì mình sẽ nói là bạn đã nói sai. Mình chưa từng gặp một người Việt vô thần nào ở Việt Nam. Việt Nam không có người Việt vô thần.

Vô thần là không tin vào thần thánh nào cả – không có Chúa/Phật, không có Bồ tát, không có các thánh, không có linh hồn ông bà tổ tiên. Chỉ như là con chó vô tri, sinh ra, sống, và chết, hoàn toàn như cây cỏ. Chẳng có người Việt nào như thế cả.

Dù không đi chùa hay nhà thờ, không theo đạo nào, thì đó là vô tôn giáo chứ không phải vô thần.

Nếu bạn đã từng thắp nhang vái trời đất đêm giao thừa, đã làm giỗ cho ông bà đã khuất, đã thắp hương trước ảnh Bác Hồ, cắm nhang nơi có nhiều tai nạn chết người, có tượng thần tài trong cửa tiệm, cảm ơn trời đất đã cho kinh doanh của bạn thành công, nếu bạn tin vào tử vi, tin vào phong thủy, tin vào số mệnh, nhờ tổ nghiệp phù hộ… thì bạn không là người vô thần.

Mình chưa từng gặp một người Việt vô thần nào ở Việt Nam. Nước Việt Nam không có người vô thần.

Bạn không theo đạo nào, đó nghĩa là bạn vô tôn giáo, vì bạn chẳng thích mấy ông thầy tu, không phải là bạn vô thần.

Mình chẳng biết mình viết bài Trà Đàm này để làm gì. Nói cho người vô thần rằng họ sai? Nhưng mình đã nói là không có người Việt vô thần để mình có thể nói gì với họ.

Có lẽ là mình chỉ viết để nói rằng nếu bạn nói bạn vô thần thì bạn sai – đúng vậy, vì ở Việt Nam không có người Việt vô thần.

Cho nên đừng chia đôi: Mày vô thần versus Mày mê tín.

Si mê, si mê, si mê!

Nếu không ai hiểu mình (TĐH) đang nói gì thì ít nhất có hai người hiểu mình: Shiddartha Gautama và Jesus of Narazareth.

Are you an atheist?

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

If you say you are an atheist Vietnamese, then I would say you are wrong. I have never met an atheist Vietnamese. There are no atheists in Vietnam.

Atheism means not believing in any gods or deities – no God/Buddha, no Bodhisattvas, no saints, no ancestral spirits. Just like a mindless dog, born, living, and dead, completely like plants and grass. No Vietnamese person is like that.

Even if you don’t go to temples or churches, don’t follow any religion, that’s non-religious, not atheistic.

If you have ever lit incense and prayed to Heaven and Earth on New Year’s Eve, held memorial services for your deceased grandparents, lit incense before a picture of Uncle Hồ, placed incense in places where many fatal accidents have occurred, have a statue of the God of Wealth in your shop, thanked Heaven and Earth for your business success, if you believe in astrology, feng shui, fate, or the blessings of the Founding Ancestor of your Profession… then you are not an atheist.

I’ve never met a Vietnamese atheist in Vietnam. There are no Vietnamese atheists in Vietnam.

If you don’t follow any religion, that means you’re non-religious, because if you don’t like monks; that doesn’t mean you’re an atheist.

I don’t know why I’m writing this Tea Talk. To tell atheists they’re wrong? But I’ve already said there are no Vietnamese atheists, so what can I say to them?

Perhaps I’m just writing to say that if you say you’re an atheist, you’re wrong – that’s right, because there are no Vietnamese atheists in Vietnam.

So don’t divide it in two: You’re an atheist versus You’re superstitious.

Delusion, delusion, delusion!

If no one understands what I am saying, at least two people understand me: Siddhartha Gautama and Jesus of Narazareth.
