Chữ “Duyên” có rất nhiều ý nghĩa trong văn hóa Việt Nam:

– Người có “Duyên” (charming) là người hấp dẫn mọi người, làm người ta yêu mến; dù người có Duyên không nhất thiết là đẹp, nhưng là hiền hòa, thành thật, đáng tin, và đáng yêu. Nghĩa “Duyên” cũng bắt nguồn từ Nhân Duyên (Causes and Conditions) của Phật triết: Khi đủ “Duyên” thì mọi sự đều thành.

– Nhân duyên (Causes and Conditions). Đây là luật nhân quả. Nhân (Causes) là mọi điều ta làm, từ vô lượng kiếp cho đến ngày nay, và còn tích tụ hậu quả đến giây phút này. Duyên (Conditions) là mọi điều kiện khác trong môi trường quanh ta, từ vô lượng kiếp đến ngày nay. Nếu bạn trồng cây, tưới nước, tỉa cành … đó là Nhân (Causes). Khí trời, mưa nắng, nóng lạnh, giông bão… đó là Duyên (Conditions).

Nhân Duyên tạo ra mọi sự cho bạn ngày nay, lúc này.

Nhân duyên còn gọi là Dependent Origination (Duyên khởi – mọi điều sinh ra đều lệ thuộc vào hàng triệu điều khác trong vũ trụ. Đó chính là Thập Nhị Nhân Duyên – 12 bước nhân duyên đưa đến luân hồi và khổ:

1. Vô minh
2. Hành
3. Thức
4. Danh sắc
5. Lục nhập
6. Thọ
7. Xúc
8. Ái
9. Thủ
10. Hữu
11. Sinh
12. Lão, Tử

Đó là vòng luân hồi lẩn quẩn dến vô lượng kiếp.

Từ “Duyên” trong Phật Triết thường có nghĩa là Nhân Duyên: Đủ Duyên để hợp thì hợp, đủ Duyên để tan thì tan.

– Điều quan trọng cần chú ý, là đại đa số người nghĩ rằng “Nhân Duyên” có nghĩa là định mệnh (destiny): Định mệnh you đã định như vậy, thì you sẽ phải như vậy, chẳng làm gì để thay đổi được. Điều này sai hoàn toàn.

Ngày hôm nay nếu bạn tạo ra nhiều “Nhân” tốt, thì các Nhân tốt đó đương nhiên tạo Nghiệp (Karma) tốt cho bạn. Nếu bạn tránh điều ác, làm điều thiện, giữ trái tim tinh khiết như chư Phật dạy (Kinh Pháp Cú), từ bi với mọi sinh linh (Kinh Từ Bi), cố gắng độ mình để độ mọi sinh linh mà không phân biệt mình và sinh linh nào và không thấy mình độ ai (Kinh Kim Cang)… thì đó là những “Nhân” tốt, tạo Nghiệp tốt, trong “Nhân Duyên” của bạn rất lớn.

Hãy nhớ rằng, những Nhân bạn làm hôm nay có ảnh hưởng mạnh mẽ hơn Nghiệp của vô số kiếp trước hàng triệu lần – bởi vì những thứ xa xôi trong quá khứ có năng lượng yếu và mờ nhạt, nhưng những thứ ở thời điểm hiện tại lại có năng lượng mạnh mẽ.

Cho nên Nhân Duyên không phải là định mệnh.

Bạn có thê tạo ra Nghiệp tốt, Nhân Duyên tốt cho bạn. Mọi sự tùy tâm bạn – Tâm là chủ (Kinh Pháp Cú).

Nhân Duyên – Causes and Conditions

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

The word “Duyên” has many meanings in Vietnamese culture:

– People with “Duyên” (charming) attract other people, other people love them; although people with “Duyên” are not necessarily beautiful, but they are gentle, honest, trustworthy, and lovable. The meaning of “Duyên” also comes from Buddhist philosophy: When there is enough “Duyên”, everything will be successful.

– Nhân Duyên – Causes and Conditions. This is the law of cause and effect. Causes (Nhân) are everything we do, from countless lifetimes to today, and still accumulate consequences to this moment. Conditions (Duyên) are all other conditions in the environment around us, from countless lifetimes to today. If you plant a tree, water it, prune it… those are Causes. Weather, rain, sun, heat, cold, storms… those are Conditions.

Causes and Conditions create everything for you today, at this moment.

Dependent Origination is Duyên Sinh (Duyên Khởi) – everything that is born depends on millions of other things in the universe. That is the Twelve Causes and Conditions – 12 steps of Causes and Conditions that lead to reincarnation (samsara) and suffering:

1. Ignorance
2. Action
3. Consciousness
4. Name and form
5. Six entrances
6. Feeling
7. Contact
8. Craving
9. Grasping
10. Existence
11. Birth
12. Aging, Death

That is the cycle of reincarnation (samsara) that continues for countless lifetimes.

The word “Duyên” in Buddhist philosophy often means Dependent Origination: If there are enough Causes and Conditions to come together, things will come together; if there are enough Causes and Conditions to separate, things will separate.

– The important thing to note is that the vast majority of people think that “Nhân Duyên” means destiny: Your destiny is determined to be like that, then you will have to be like that, there is nothing you can do to change it. This is completely wrong.

Today, if you create many good “Causes”, those good causes naturally create good Karma in your Causes and Conditions. If you avoid evil, do good deeds, keep a pure heart as the Buddha taught (Dhammapada), be compassionate to all living beings (Metta Sutra), try to save all living beings without distinguishing between yourself and any living being and do not see yourself saving anyone (Diamond Sutra)… then those are good Karma greatly effecting your “Causes and Conditions”.

Remember, the Causes you do today have a stronger influence than the Karma of countless previous lives millions of times – because things faraway in the past have weak and faint energy, but things at the present time are strong in energy.

So Causes and Conditions are not destiny.

You can create good Karma, good Causes and Conditions for yourself. Everything depends on your mind – The mind is the master (Dhammapada).
