Chào anh chị em,

Ngày nọ có trục trặc gì đó mà việc nấu ăn tối cho thiền sư Tào Động Fugai và các đệ tử bị trễ. Người đầu bếp hấp tấp cầm lưỡi hái chạy ra vườn cắt một mớ rau, băm nhỏ, rồi nấu canh, không biết là vì vội vàng mà anh ta đã băm luôn một phần của con rắn bị cắt trong vườn.

Các đệ tử của Fugai nghĩ là họ chưa bao giờ được ăn canh ngon như vậy. Nhưng khi thiền sư thấy một đầu rắn trong chén của mình, thiền sư gọi đầu bếp lên. “Cái gì đây?” giơ cao đầu rắn.

“Ồ, dạ, cám ơn thầy,” người đầu bếp trả lời, lấy đầu rắn và ăn nó rất nhanh.

Bình:

• Tu sĩ phải ăn chay, không được ăn thịt. Mọi người đã bị phá giới ăn canh rắn. Nhưng họ không biết. Không biết thì không tội.

Anh đầu bếp, lấy đầu rắn từ thầy và nuốt lẹ, tức là cố tình phá giới, phạm tội với giáo pháp, ngay trước mắt thầy, không chối cãi được. Và dòng Tào Động rất gắt gao về giới luật.

Nhưng anh ta làm thế để giúp cho tất cả mọi người khác tiếp tục không biết là họ đã bị phá giới và ăn thịt rắn, không có cảm tưởng có tội trong lòng.

• Tâm Bồ tát: Sẵn sàng phá giới và mang tội vào mình (nếu đó là tội) để giữ an vui cho người khác.

• Giới luật luôn có đó. Giữ giới hay không là do mình quyết định theo đòi hỏi của từng trường hợp.

Ăn tội – Eating the Blame

Dear Brothers and Sister,

Circumstances arose one day which delayed preparation of the dinner of a Soto Zen master, Fukai, and his followers. In haste the cook went to the garden with his curved knife and cut off the tops of green vegetables, chopped them together and made soup, unaware that in his haste he had included a part of a snake in the vegetables.

The followers of Fugai thought they never tasted such good soup. But when the master himself found the snake’s head in his bowl, he summoned the cook. “What is this?” he demanded, holding up the head of the snake.

“Oh, thank you, master,” replied the cook, taking the morsel and eating it quickly.

Annotation:

• Monks must be vegetarian, not eat meat. Everyone has broken the precept by eating snake soup. But they do not know. No knowledge, no sin.

The chef, taking the snake head from the teacher and swallowing it quickly, is intentionally breaking the precept, committing the breaking of the Dharma, right in front of the teacher, there is no denying it. And the Soto sect is very strict about precepts.

But he did so to help everyone else continue to be unknowledgeable that they have broken the precept and eat snake meat, without feeling guilty in their hearts.

• Bodhisattva Mind: Willing to break the precepts and take the sin upon oneself (if it is a sin) to keep others happy.

• The precepts are always there. Whether or not to keep the precepts is up to you to decide according to the requirements of each situation.
