Dear brothers and sisters,

From childhood to adulthood, I often avoided listening to sad music because I knew I would be sad easily. When I was about 5 or 6 years old, I often watched reformed opera (cải lương) with my mother every night. Even though I didn’t understand the content of the stories, when I saw the actors crying, I cried too. I know I am easily moved when I see others moved.

However, now I feel calm enough to listen to the cries of others while my heart is still calm, not too painful, not too miserable. Moreover, because I want to understand the hearts of Southern people better, I listen to bolero and reformed opera. These two genres of music often talk about sad love stories. So I listen to this music and still feel at peace in my heart. I listen to this music because I want to understand the hearts of our Vietnamese people better.
