Chào anh chị em,

ĐCN là một điểm mốc lớn trong tiến trình dài mình tình nguyện phục vụ Việt Nam. Mình kể vắn tắn tiến trình đó để các bạn có thể hiểu thêm về lịch sử ĐCN.

Năm 1989, mình được mời vào nhóm thành lập US-VN Trade Council để thúc đẩy bang giao Việt Mỹ. Lúc đó Mỹ đang cấm vận VN.

Đến 1992 mình lập Vietnamese American Education Foundation (VAEF), vận động và sắp xếp cho chuyên gia Việt Kiều về nước dạy học và chuyển giao công nghệ. Mình cũng dạy ở Bộ Tư Pháp, Trọng tài Nhà nước, và Phòng Thương Mại VN ở Hà Hội, và Sở Tư Pháp, Viện Kinh Tế, và báo Sài Gòn Tiếp Thị ở Sài Gòn. Đây cũng là trong mục đích thúc đẩy bang giao Việt Mỹ.

Cũng khoảng năm 1992 mình mở VNForum bằng tiếng Anh tập trung vào đọc giả là các chuyên gia nước ngoài làm việc ở VN – các tòa Đại Sứ và các tổ chức quốc tế như World Bank, ADB, UNDP… vì mình thấy các quý vị thiếu thông tin. Thời đó thông tin ở VN rất thiếu thốn. Chưa có Internet. Thời đó chỉ có Bulletin Board, thực sự là một trạm trung ương chuyển email của mình tới mọi thành viên. Khoảng 3 năm sau khi mình mở VNForum có một cậu làm việc với nhóm Bộ Quốc Phòng Mỹ đang tìm chiến binh Mỹ chết và mất tích ở VN về Washington đi ăn phở với mình và nói: “Hoành, VNForum của you là cửa sổ cho tất cả mọi người từ nước ngoài vào VN làm việc như tôi nhìn vào Việt Nam, vì VN rất thiếu thông tin. Hơn nữa, mấy dòng giới thiệu mỗi bản tin của you luôn giúp chúng tôi hiểu thông tin rất rõ.”

Đến khoảng 1998, lúc đó Internet đã ra đời rồi và người nước ngoài ở VN không còn thiếu tin nữa. Hơn nữa trí thức Việt Nam nhiều người đã du học ở Mỹ, Âu Châu và Singapore, và giỏi tiếng Anh, mình mở VNBiz Forum, bằng tiếng Anh, tập trung vào trí thức Việt ở VN, với các vấn đề kinh tế và phát triển đất nước. Rồi mình từ từ đóng VNForum và chuyển đọc giả ở đó qua VNBiz.

Đến khoảng 2008 mình thấy trí thức VN đã hiểu nhiều về các môn học để phát triển đất nước, không cần VNBiz nữa, nhưng người Việt bình thường, không giỏi tiếng Anh cần một nguồn thông tin tốt. Mình thấy positive thinking là điều tốt nhất và cần nhất vì đó là nền tảng của cuộc sống.

Thực ra mình đã nghĩ đến postive thinking trước đó khoảng 20 năm, nhưng vì bận làm các việc kia bằng tiếng Anh, nên bây giờ mới rảnh tay nghĩ đến làm cho mọi người bằng tiếng Việt.

Thời đó môn tư duy tích cực chưa có ở Việt Nam. Mình tìm cách dịch từ positive thinking sang tiếng Việt. Nếu dịch là “suy nghĩ tích cực” thì nghe ngớ ngẩn quá. Mình suy nghĩ mãi, và nhận ra là lúc đó từ “tư duy” rất thịnh hành ở VN – tư duy mới, tư duy đổi mới, tư duy lạc hậu… Mình thấy từ “tư duy” hay quá, vậy mình gọi môn “Positive thinking” của Mục sư Norman Vincent Peale là môn “Tư duy tích cực” của mình. (Trợ lý của Norman Vincent Peale trong cả 20 năm là bạn của mình).

Khó khăn khác là thời đó mà nói đến tư duy tích cực thì rất nhiều người nói “Ối dào, đó chỉ là cung cách tự lừa mình trong đầu mình. Ăn rồi cứ ngồi tưởng tượng chuyện tề thiên.” Mình nghĩ, “Nhưng nếu mình nói dễ hiểu, và nghe có lý, và nói mãi không ngừng, thì từ từ cũng phải có nhiều người nắm được chứ.”

Một ngày đầu tháng 2 năm 2009, Nguyễn Minh Hiển, lúc đó là thành viên VNBiz và đang ở New York thì phải, về Washington thăm mình. Mình hỏi Hiển, “Anh muốn làm một blog về Tư duy tích cực, bằng tiếng Việt, cho người Việt. Hiển muốn làm với anh không?” Hiển trả lời: “Vâng, em muốn.” Mình nói: “Vậy em nghiên cứu mở blog đi, anh lo bài vở, em lo kỹ thuật, nhưng cũng nên viết bài khi em muốn.” Hiển nói, “Em có thể mở ngay bây giờ.”

Thế là Hiển dùng computer của mình để mở ngay cho mình một cái blog và chỉ mình cách sử dụng. Mình đặt tên blog là Đọt Chuối Non vì cây chuối là biểu tượng của đồng quê VN, đi đâu cũng thấy chuối. Cây tre cũng là biểu tượng cho VN, nhưng mọi người dùng nhiều rồi. Mình muốn có cái gì mới hơn. Hơn nữa, đọt chuối rất đẹp dưới ánh nắng mặt trời.

Đọt Chuối Non có dư một chữ, đọt là đủ rồi, non là dư. Nhưng mình thích âm thanh lên xuống cùa “đọt chuối non,” thay vì cụt ngủn, thiếu âm nhạc như “đọt chuối.”

Chỉ có một điều mình không biết là thời đó ở Việt Nam người ta hay chê nhau “Cậu củ chuối quá”. Không sao, củ chuối khác đọt chuối!

Và mình chọn slogan cho ĐCN là “Tư duy tích cực mỗi ngày” vì mình muốn mọi người tư duy tích cực luôn luôn, vì thế mình nguyện sẽ viết một bài trà đàm mỗi ngày, để mọi người có bài mới đọc mỗi ngày, và nhớ tư duy tích cưc mỗi ngày.

Thứ bảy, ngày 7 tháng 2 năm 2009 mình có 3 bài đăng đầu tiên trên ĐCN.

– Nửa ly nước, bài Trà đàm đầu tiên và cũng là một trong những bài được đọc nhiều nhất trên ĐCN.

– Cái gì làm ra mình?, dịch một câu danh ngôn ngắn.

– Đứng dậy đi tiếp, chỉ có một dòng.

Cho đến nay ĐCN đã có gần 18 triệu lượt đọc, và ba cuốn sách do nhà Xuất bản Phụ nữ phát hành: nhà xuất bản đọc các bài Trà đàm của mình và nói mình lựa một mớ bài để xuất bản cho mỗi cuốn sách: “Tư duy tích cực thay đổi cuộc sống”, “10 giá trị cốt lõi của thành công”, và “Sống một cuộc đời ý nghĩa.”

Vì Tư duy tích cực mình nói trên ĐCN đặt nền tảng trên trái tim linh thiêng (trái tim là tâm, linh thiêng là linh) của mỗi người chúng ta, trong liên kết với Chúa Phật, Trời Đất, Thánh Thần, nên mình sáng tạo ra cụm từ “Tâm linh tích cực” cho “Tư duy tích cực của ĐCN.”

Mình đã viết gần 5 nghìn bài Trà đàm. Và hiện nay, các bài Trà đàm của mình đều là song ngữ Việt Anh.

Hầu hết mọi việc mình làm đã được giáo sư Caroline Kiều Linh Valverde của University of California – Davis ghi lại trong luận án tiến sĩ của cô, mà sau đó in thành cuốn sách Transnationlizing Vietnam (Xuyên quốc gia hóa Việt Nam). Đó là một công trình nghiên cứu rất kỹ càng và sâu sắc về những cố gắng của người Việt nước ngoài trong việc giúp đỡ quê mẹ, trong một giai đoạn lịch sử rối rắm và phức tạp của Việt Nam, với những định lý xã hội học mới mà Kiều Linh đã đặt ra để lý giải, mà đã trở thành nền tảng để các chuyên gia xã hội học có thể dùng sau này.

Chúng ta cũng có Học bổng Đọt Chuối Non do chị Hoàng Thiên Nga quản lý rất mạnh ở DakLak và các tỉnh Tây Nguyên 13 năm nay, với 18 kỳ trao học bổng cho các em.

Số bạn đọc ĐCN xưa nay vẫn đều đặn mỗi ngày.

Từ lúc chưa có cụm từ “tư duy tích cực” 16 năm trước, ngày nay tư duy tích cực là điều mọi người nói đến và khuyến khích thực hành hàng ngày ở VN.

Và ĐCN cho đến ngày nay vẫn là trang web duy nhất tập trung 100% vào tư duy tích cực mỗi ngày ở VN.

Những thành quả ĐCN đạt được đương nhiên là nhờ các bạn đọc hỗ trợ và đồng hành với ĐCN trên suốt con đường, đặc biệt là các admins và tác giả, hiện nay là Thu Hương, Linh Phượng, Bảo Ngọc, Thu Hằng, Quỳnh Linh, Thiều Linh, An An, Nguyễn Anh Tuấn, Nguyễn Hữu Vinh, Đàm Duy Hân, Bùi Gia Thắng…

Và đương nhiên là do Chúa Phật hỗ trợ luôn luôn.

Lịch sử ĐCN – ĐCN History

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

ĐCN is a major milestone in my long process of volunteering to serve Vietnam. I will briefly tell you about that process so that you can understand more about the history of ĐCN.

In 1989, I was invited to join the group that established the US-VN Trade Council to promote Vietnam-US relations. At that time, the US was embargoing Vietnam.

In 1992, I established the Vietnamese American Education Foundation (VAEF), mobilizing and arranging for overseas Vietnamese experts to return to the country to teach and transfer technology. I also taught at the Ministry of Justice, the State Arbitration, and the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce in Hanoi, and the Department of Justice, the Institute of Economics, and the Saigon Marketing newspaper in Saigon. This is also in the work of promoting VN-US relationship.

Also around 1992, I opened VNForum in English focusing on readers who were foreign experts working in Vietnam – embassies and international organizations such as the World Bank, ADB, UNDP… because I saw that they lacked information. At that time, information in Vietnam was very scarce. There was no Internet. Then there was only Bulletin Board, which was really a central hub dispatch my email to all members. About 3 years after I opened VNForum, a guy who worked with the US Department of Defense group searching for dead and missing American soldiers in Vietnam came to Washington to eat phở with me and said: “Hoanh, your VNForum is a window for expats working in Vietnam like me to look into Vietnam, because Vietnam very much lacks information. Moreover, the few introductory lines of each of your news item always help us understand the information very clearly.”

President Clinton normalized US-Vietnam diplomatic relations in 1995.

By around 1998, the Internet had been born and foreigners in Vietnam no longer lacked information. Moreover, many Vietnamese intellectuals had studied in the US, Europe and Singapore, and were good at English, so I opened VNBiz Forum, in English, focusing on Vietnamese intellectuals in Vietnam, with economic issues and national development. Then I slowly closed VNForum and transferred readers there to VNBiz.

Around 2008, I saw that Vietnamese intellectuals had understood well all the subjects related to national development, and did not need VNBiz anymore, but ordinary Vietnamese people who were not good at English needed a source of good information. I found that positive thinking was the best and most necessary thing because it was the foundation of life.

Actually, I had thought about positive thinking about 20 years previously, but because I was busy doing other things in English, now I had some free time to think about doing it for everyone in Vietnamese.

At that time, the subject “positive thinking” was not yet available in Vietnam. I tried to translate “positive thinking” into Vietnamese. If I translated it as “suy nghĩ tích cực”, it would sound silly. I thought about it for a long time, and realized that at that time the word “tư duy” was very popular in Vietnam – new tư duy, innovative tư duy, outdated tư duy… I found the word “tư duy” very interesting, so I called Pastor Norman Vincent Peale’s “Positive thinking” subject my “Tư duy tích cực” subject. (Norman Vincent Peale’s assistant for 20 years was my friend).

Another difficulty was that at that time, when talking about positive thinking, many people said, “Oh, that’s just a way of fooling yourself in your head. After a full belly, you just sit there imagining the Monkey God things.” I thought, “But if I make it easy to understand, and make sense, and keep talking, then gradually many people will understand.”

One day in early February 2009, Nguyen Minh Hien, who was a member of VNBiz and was in New York, I think, came to Washington to visit me. I asked Hien, “I want to make a blog about Positive Thinking, in Vietnamese, for Vietnamese people. Do you want to do it with me?” Hien said, “Yes, I want to do it.” I said, “So you should research and open a blog. I’ll take care of the writing, you take care of the technical stuff, but you should also write when you want.” Hien said, “I can open it right now.”

So Hien used my computer to open a blog for me right away and showed me how to use it. I named the blog Dot Chuoi Non because the banana tree is a symbol of the Vietnamese countryside, you can see bananas everywhere. Bamboo is also a symbol of Vietnam, but everyone has used it a lot. I wanted something new. Moreover, the banana tree is very beautiful under the sunlight.

Dot Chuoi Non (banana shoot) has an extra word, “dot” (shoot) is enough, “non” (young) is extra. But I like the up and down sound of “dot chuoi non,” instead of being short and lacking in music like “dot chuoi.”

The only thing I didn’t know was that at that time in Vietnam, people often criticized each other, “You’re banana root.” It’s okay, “banana root” is different from “banana shoot”!

And I chose the slogan for ĐCN as “Positive thinking every day” because I wanted everyone to always think positively, so I vow to write a Tea Talk each day, so that everyone has a new article to read each day, and remember to think positively each day.

Saturday, February 7, 2009, I had the first 3 posts on ĐCN.

– Half cup of water, the first Tea Talk post and also one of the most read posts on ĐCN.

– What makes me?, translated a short famous quote.

– Get up and keep going, just one line.

Up to now, ĐCN has had nearly 18 million pageviews, and 3 books published by The Women’s Publishing House. The publisher read my Tea Talks and asked me to select a bunch of articles to publish in a book. The 3 books are “Positive Thinking Changes Life”, “10 Core Values ​​of Success”, and “Living a Meaningful Life.”

Because the Positive Thinking that I have talked in ĐCN is based on the sacred heart of each of us, in connection with God, Buddha, Heaven, Earth, and all the saints and holy spirits, I created the phrase “Positive Spirituality” for “ĐCN’s Positive Thinking.”

I have written close to 5 thousands Tea Talks. And currently, all my Tea Talks are bilingual in Vietnamese and English.

Most of what I did was recorded by Professor Caroline Kieu Linh Valverde of the University of California – Davis in her doctoral thesis, which was later published in the book Transnationlizing Vietnam. It was a very thorough and profound research work on the efforts of overseas Vietnamese to help their motherland, during a complicated and chaotic period of Vietnam’s history, with new sociological theorems that Kieu Linh set out to explain, which became the foundation for sociological experts to use later.

We also have the Dot Chuoi Non Scholarship managed by Ms. Hoang Thien Nga, which has been very strong in DakLak and the Central Highlands provinces for 13 years now, with 18 scholarship award ceremonies over the years.

The number of readers of ĐCN has been steady every day.

From the time when the phrase “Tư duy tích cực” (positive thinking) did not exist 16 years ago, today Tư duy tích cực is something that people talk about and encourage each other to practice every day in Vietnam.

And ĐCN to this day is still the only website that focuses 100% on positive thinking every day in Vietnam.

The achievements that ĐCN has gained are of course thanks to you readers who have supported and accompanied ĐCN throughout the journey, especially the admins and authors, currently Thu Huong, Linh Phuong, Bao Ngoc, Thu Hang, Quynh Linh, Thieu Linh, An An, Nguyen Anh Tuan, Nguyen Huu Vinh, Dam Duy Han, Bui Gia Thang…

And of course, thanks to God’s and Buddha’s constant blessings.
