Faith as small as a mustard seed

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Probably the strongest statement about human faith in history comes from Jesus: “If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” (Mathew 17:20).

Wow, how do we tell this mountain to move from here to there, and the mountain will move? Can you do that? Probably if you have a huge construction company, they can do that for you; but if they have to break this mountain to pieces and build a new mountain from those pieces, it wouldn’t be the same mountain.

Or an easier way, if there is a river flowing in front of the mountain and the mountain stands behind the river, and you want they exchange places so that the mountain stands in front of the river and the river flows through the back of the mountain, you simply dig a man-made river circling around the back of the mountain, divert the water from the main river to the man-made river and block up the part of the main river in front of the mountain.

You can “move” a physical mountain that way, if you believe you can do that. Although it’s kinda difficult.

However, Jesus was talking about the mountains in your spiritual life. On your spiritual path there are hundreds or thousands of huge mountains blocking your path, one after another, to hinder your spiritual progress. Many people cannot get anywhere with those mountains. But if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you will simply order them to move, and they will move. That is the power of your mind, coming from your faith.

But what faith? Faith in what? In who?

As the words came from Jesus, of course Jesus was talking your faith in God. But as a matter of super-psychology, I would think Jesus’ statement talks about two kinds of faith – faith in you and faith in God.

For some easy matters, probably you just need the faith in you. Say, you want to make it into medical school, and you don’t know God, you know only you, and you have faith in yourself. You study hard. That faith would be good enough to conquer all the little mountains on you path – you conquer them and focus on your study until you get into a medical school.

But the huge emotional or spiritual mountains – like spouse’s betrayal, a friend backstabbing you, the loss of your big position and reputation, the collapse of your huge business, all your properties lost, a deadly disease… These mountains are so big and so painful that just one of them is enough to kill you, or at least make you so sick and so weak that you have no energy left to stand.

That’s when you need God’s support. God doesn’t care you have known him or not, or if you have any religion or no religion at all. You are God’s child and God knows you as his beloved child. God loves you and has always taken care of you, whether you know that or not.

So, at those painful junctures of your life, when you feel your have collapsed, ask God, your Father, to help you, and He will hold your arm and lift you up, to pass those mountains.

You don’t have to know God to ask for God’s help. Just (1) have faith in Him and (2) ask.

Just say, “God (Chúa ơi, Thượng đế ơi, Trời ơi), I haven’t known you, but now I am at the end, I have no one to turn to, and anh Hoành has told me to turn to you, and I believe in you, because I have always heard there is Ông Trời (Mr. Heaven) since I was very little. I believe you can help me and you will help me, because I am your child. Please, help me and lift me up.”

And you shall overcome.

Trust me.

With compassion,

Hoành
