Sách Job ở Cựu Ước là cuốn sách kể chuyện về Job, người đàn ông được God cho Chúa quỷ cám dỗ Job bỏ God bằng cách đưa đến cho Job rất nhiều tai họa lớn như mất hết con cái, mất tài sản, mất sức khỏe, không còn gia đình và bạn bè ở bên, nhưng Job vẫn một lòng tin tưởng ở God. Job vẫn ngợi khen God: “Trí tuệ của Ngài thật thẳm sâu (Job 9:4)”. Và Job vẫn tin God: “Dầu Ngài có giết con, con vẫn cậy trông nơi Ngài (Job 13:15).”

Job and us

Dear brothers and sisters,

To a parent who has only one child, perhaps the child is the most valuable thing in the world. If an unexpected accident comes and the child dies, the parent will be so sorrowful.

If the parent has 10 children including sons and daughters, and they all die suddenly, the parent’s pain would be totally unbearable and indescribable.

Job in Bible was in such a situation. He had 7 sons and 3 daughters. Job’s sons and daughters were feasting and drinking wine at the oldest brother’s house, when suddenly a mighty wind swept in from the desert and struck the four corners of the house. It collapsed on them and they were killed. (Job 1:18-19).

At the same time, another misfortune – his wealth was lost. He owned 7.000 sheep, 3.000 camels, 500 yoke of oxen and 500 donkeys, and had a large number of servants. He was the greatest man among all the people of the East. (Job 1:2-3). However, many horrible things came and made him lose all his wealth.

With what Job suffered, did he curse God? Did Job ask God questions such as: Why did you treat me unfairly? What was wrong with me? What was wrong with my children? Why did you let all of my children die?…

No, Job didn’t curse God. He said:

“Naked I came from my mother’s womb,
    and naked I will depart.
The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away;
    may the name of the Lord be praised.” (Job 1:21).

After losing all of his children and his wealth, Job lost his health because of painful sores from the soles of his feet to the crown of his head. The sores were so bad that Job took a piece of broken pottery and scraped himself with it as he sat among the ashes. Job’s wife said to him: “Curse God and die”,  but Job replied: “Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble?” (Job 2:7-10).

Job’s friends accused him of committing sins and told him that he deserved the suffering as punishment from God. Job replied he was blameless. He praised God: “His wisdom is profound (Job 9:4).” And he trusted in God: “Though He slay me, yet will I hope in Him (Job 13:15).”

Can we live like Job?

If we lose all of our children, our wealth, our health, and support of our lover and friends…, would we curse God, or would we praise God? Would we see that God’s wisdom is profound, and all things from God are good? Would we accept good from God, and not trouble? Would we still hope in God though apparently God slays us?

Be like Job. Trust God in everything. Whatever comes from God is good even if it may look troublesome in our eyes.
