Repaying old debts

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Did you ever owe someone some kind of debt, monetary debt or emotional debt, that you couldn’t repay and now you have no chance to repay (because, say, the person is dead)?

How do you feel about that?

I have a bunch of debts like that, probably all emotional debts, because I can’t remember I have any unpaid monetary debt. And every time remembering an unpaid debt, I still feel bad, though it was several decades ago. I guess we never forget things like that. They really don’t bother me much, but I still remember and feel bad anyway. And I wish I have a way to repay or make up.

Life moves forward constantly and we can’t go backward to the old times to catch up.

So, what do we do?

We can repay our old debts by forgiving our debtors today. Many people owe us monetary or emotional debts, we can forgive their debts as a way to repay our own past debts. Life keeps moving forward, so we keep forgiving our current debtors, to repay our past debts. And our current debtors, in turn, will forgive someone else’s debts in the future. In that way we all keep the world moving forward debt-free, so to speak.

The word “debtor” reminds me of the Lord’s Prayer,  which is the prayer Jesus taught his disciples, with this sentence: “Father, forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.” (Matthew 6:12).

If we forgive our debtors, Heaven forgives us our debts. That is truly the Holy Spirit of debt forgiving.

Wish we all be debt free.

With compassion,

Hoành
